(4)Pedestrians Soliciting Rides or Business. No person shall stand in a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride, employment or business from the operator or occupant of any vehicle without the written permission of the Commissioner or Commissioner's designee.
Massachusetts does not appear to have a legal definition of roadway in their laws. It could be reasonably assumed that if you are on the grass and not on the paved portion of a road that you are within the bounds of the law. However, because of the lack of a legal definition of roadway in this context, it is advisable to avoid confrontations with police of or troopers.
