Outside of the big cities stand on the interstate and look confused and desperate while still upbeat. I had lots of short and interesting hop rides in LA.

Louisiana Revised Statutes 32:218 - Pedestrians soliciting rides or business
A. No person shall stand on a public roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride, employment, or business from the occupant of any vehicle.
Title 32.1 Definitions (59) "Roadway" means that portion of a highway improved, designed, or ordinarily used for vehicular traffic, exclusive of the berm or shoulder.
