When looking for cheap food and drinks, you can easily try these student areas, as there are many cheap bars (drinks €1-€2) and restaurants/snack bars. Scattered through the city are also a lot of so called frietkoten. These are small restaurants or even shacks, where you can buy fries and snacks against extremely low prices. It's real Belgian culture, and you should really try it out if you ever visit Belgium.
Blackriding is easy and safe in Gent: you don't need to show a ticket to enter trams and buses, and controllers are very rare and uniformed.
