Severobaykalsk (Russian: Северобайкальск) is a city in Russia, located in the northwest corner of Lake Baikal. Although it is administratively part of Buryatia, reaching the republican capital Ulan-Ude by land from Severobaykalsk is not possible.

Hitchhiking out

Northeast towards Nizhneangarsk and Uoyan via the "BAM Bypass Road"

  • From the train station, walk along the avenue past the market to the intersection with Studencheskaya Street and turn right, crossing the BAM railway by bridge. After the bridge, turn sharply left and hitchhike there. Alternatively, cross the tracks using the pedestrian bridge and walk about 800 meters between the woods and the BAM to reach the same spot.

Northwest towards Ulkan and Ust-Kut via the "BAM Bypass Road"

  • On the same Studencheskaya Street, turn left. There will be a petrol station at the northern edge of the city, and after another kilometer you'll see the city entrance monument "Severobaykalsk".

Accommodation and Sleep

  • You can camp along the wooded banks of the Tyya River in the southern part of the city, or on the pebble shore of Lake Baikal towards Nizhneangarsk. The city beach is less suitable for sleeping – at night, it tends to attract drunk locals who light fires.
  • On Yarki Island, there is a guarded tent camp in the summer.

Other useful info

  • There are several private cafes in the city and along Lake Baikal's shore; prices and quality are unpredictable.
  • The Hakusy thermal resort on the opposite side of Baikal is accessible by boat. There are fees for transport and entry to the hot springs; check full details at http://hakusy.com.
  • Local public transport includes four city bus routes and several suburban lines.
  • The airport is in Nizhneangarsk and receives flights from Ulan-Ude and Irkutsk.
  • The train station is large and offers various services.
