Indiana is a state in the United States of America. Speaking from a very limited experience hitching in Indiana, people are generally really friendly and will give rides easily. Expect to talk about religion. There are many truck stops and various off interstate areas where you can get rides or simply hitch on the interstate or on ramp. Indiana is one of THE best states to get rides!
IC 9-21-17-16 Solicitation of rides; restrictions; emergency Sec. 16. A person may not stand in a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride from a person who drives a vehicle unless the person soliciting a ride is faced with an emergency on the roadway, in which case the person may secure a ride to obtain assistance.
IC 9-13-2-157 "Roadway" Sec. 157. (a) Except as provided in subsection (b), "roadway" means that part of a highway improved, designed, or ordinarily used for vehicular travel. (b) As used in IC 9-21-12-13, "roadway" means the part of a highway that is improved, designed, or ordinarily used for vehicular travel. The term does not include the sidewalk, berm, or shoulder, even if the sidewalk, berm, or shoulder is used by persons riding bicycles or other human powered vehicles.
NOTE Subsection (b) only applies to a law regarding school buses stopping. This means that the definition of roadway as used in the hitchhiking law could technically be interpreted as including the shoulder. It is therefore recommended that you stay off the shoulder and on the grass when hitchhiking in Indiana.
Me and my wife hitched through Indiana in about 3 hours, we went from Fort Wayne to Chicago, and got rides within several minutes. The people there are a lot friendlier then on the east coast. We didn't have to walk more then half a mile before we got picked up, and even passing cars and trucks honked, and waved at us. - Hunter
My only experience in Indiana was along the I-90 toll road. Hitchhiking was relatively easy, but be aware it is illegal to loiter in the rest areas along the turnpike. A security guard wanted to kick me out, but after a polite and respectful conversation, she became a bit more lenient. You may be less lucky. Thus it may be best to wait for a long distance ride across the state rather than stopping along the tollway. Thewindandrain (talk) 23:40, 1 June 2013 (CEST)
