== Hitching out ==
=== North up SH1 towards Bulls/Taupo/Taranaki/Hamilton/Auckland === Catch the train to Paekakariki (Kapiti line), walk out of the station towards the direction the train arrived from. Turn left onto the highway, there is a good spot with a bus stop bay just 20m further.
There are several options for getting out At the corner of Taranaki St. and Arthur St., close to the citytop of Cuba St. - there is a little space, but not very convenient for cars to pull over here. Still might be worth a go if you don't fancy walking.
# At the corner of Taranaki St. and Arthur St., close to the top of Cuba St., is an excellent spot for going north. Just thumb after the traffic lights and there is plenty of space for people to stop safely.# From the main Wellington train station, walk along the main road (Waterloo Quay) towards the stadium. Follow the road as it bends around past the stadium (the street name changes to Aotea Quay). ThenFollow this road until it crosses the motorway (SH1), just past cross under the bend, there is space to stand bridge and for cars to pull over as there is you'll find a turning lane to go left into some parking. This is a really quiet car park and no one uses this lane so it is a perfect place to stand.# A common approach to getting out of Wellington bus stop on Route SH1 to the north is from Paraparaumuright. "Paraparam" is far enough out that one can avoid all the short trip cars going Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to work from Wellington. To get here take the train from Wellington Station ($10, note that ticket inspectors are always on the train)a ride, just try not to accidentally flag down a journey of 55 minutesbus. At Paraparaumu station, exit  === North up SH2 towards Masterton/Hastings/Napier/Gisborne === Take the train and turn right to walk north to the end of Upper Hutt then the platform. Continue this direction number 110 bus to the "Maoribank, Mangaroa road and turn leftnear SH2". Turn right at Hop off the lights bus and you are now on route SH1. You can hitch here but it cross SH2, there is very busy, so continue about 800 m further north along a great spot where the road, around traffic lights force the curve till you come traffic to the nice big [http://maps.stop and there is a pull in area - on google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=paraparaumu,nz&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=0.015547,0.040169&layer=&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=17&ll=-40.910618,175.016858&spn=0.003681,0.013561&t=h&iwloc=addr lay-by]. This it is a perfect hitching spot1183 River Road Clouston Park, located opposite a service station and a place called Boat City Upper Hutt. Taking the train may seem time-consuming,but We got picked up in reality you have shaved this time off your total trip since it takes almost an hour to get here by car from Wellington, especially if the traffic is bad5 mins.
=== Ferry to South Island, [[Picton]] ===
You pay (normally around $45-55) per person. And it's better to book in advance although be aware of deals around the start and end of the university year, when specials sometimes crop up.
There is If you ask around a way to take bit on the ferry for free: one can hitch it will be easy to get a ride with people going over the ferry, but it takes a bit of luck and a slightly daring driver. You just need to hide in the car beneath some baggage [[Nelson]] or something. Then, once the car is in its place other places in the boat, get out and go straight up the stairs and onto the upstairs part of the ship where the people go. Don't hang around the car, because ferry employees may notice youSouth Island.  == Nomadwiki & Trashwiki == {{nomadwiki}}
