Wellington is the capital of New Zealand.
== Hitching in == When arriving to in the Wellingtonarea, you might be able to catch a local train, but even at night it's worth to just try trying to hitchhike into the city when if you're North from north of the point where the highway (motorway) starts. If you are dropped off along the highway your , you can try hitching from an on ramp onramp or you could take the train into the city. == Hitching out == === North up SH1 towards Bulls/Taupo/Taranaki/Hamilton/Auckland === Catch the train to Paekakariki (Kapiti line), walk out of the station towards the direction the train arrived from. Turn left onto the highway, there is a good spot with a bus stop bay just 20m further.  At the corner of Taranaki St. and Arthur St., close to the top of Cuba St. - there is a little space, but not very convenient for cars to pull over here. Still might be worth a go if you don't fancy walking.
== Hitchhiking out ===== Heading North ===From the Main wellington main Wellington train station, walk along the main rd road (Waterloo Quay) towards the stadium (named waterloo quay), follow . Follow the road as it bends around past the stadium (the road street name changes name and is now aotea quayto Aotea Quay). then just past Follow this road until it crosses the bendmotorway (SH1), there is space to stand cross under the bridge and for cars you'll find a bus stop on the right. Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to pull over as there is get a turning lane ride, just try not to go left into some parking. This is a really quiet car park and no one uses this lane so it is accidentally flag down a perfect place to stand. no trouble to get rides:)Hitch spot by stadium http://goo.gl/maps/s3JY. in my opinion dont waste yourtime with the trainbus.
North up SH2 towards Masterton/Hastings/Napier/Gisborne
A common approach Take the train to getting out of Wellington on Route SH1 Upper Hutt then the number 110 bus to the north is from Paraparaumu. "ParaparamMaoribank, Mangaroa road near SH2" is far enough out that one can avoid all the short trip cars going to work from Wellington. To get here take Hop off the train from Wellington station which costs about $10! (ticket inspectors are always on the train) bus and takes 55 minutes. At Paraparaumu stationcross SH2, exit there is a great spot where the train and turn right to walk north to traffic lights force the end of the platform. Continue this direction traffic to the road and turn left. Turn right at the lights stop and this there is Route SH1. You can hitch here but a pull in area - on google maps it is very busy1183 River Road Clouston Park, so continue about 800m further north along the road, around the curve till you come to the nice big Upper Hutt.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=paraparaumu,nz&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=0.015547,0.040169&layer=&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=17&ll=-40.910618,175.016858&spn=0.003681,0.013561&t=h&iwloc=addr lay-by. The perfect hitching spot!It is opposite a service station and a place called boat city. It may seem like alot of time to get out here, but We got picked up in reality you have shaved this time off your total trip since it takes almost an hour to get here by car from Wellington, especially if the traffic is bad5 mins.
Ferry to South Island, Picton
You can't take the ferry for free. Guaka hasn't tried hitching a ride from cars going on the ferry. You pay (normally around $45-55) per person. And it's better to book in advance although be aware of deals around the start and end of the university year, when specials sometimes crop up.
