Helping with development
:Also, moving away from Wikia was not too hard, but it didn't go as smooth as expected.

::Sorry, the file didn't show up. Isn't it possible to create it with current XML dumps? guaka (talk) 17:34, 3 September 2013 (CEST)
:::Spaak (talk) 05:04, 4 September 2013 (CEST) Thanks and sorry, complete noob here. Would the xml files be stored here http://hitchwiki.org/dumps/ ? The page is empty and/or under construction. It would be cool to load the places of the hitchwiki map in either Marble, Monav or any osm-compatible navigation software for offline use. To be clear, I mean the places, rather than the general hh info. Can this be done?:::: I just repaired the dumps: See here. The GFDL ones won't work. We probably lost them. --MrTweek(talk) 07:56, 4 September 2013 (CEST) ::::: /dumps was still showing "forbidden". Fixed now :) guaka (talk) 11:07, 4 September 2013 (CEST) ::::: Spaak (talk) 17:13, 4 September 2013 (CEST) Nice! If i were to run the hitchwiki-current-en in Marble, it seems the xml file must be converted to a .pak file first, or? After checking here techbase.kde.org/Projects/Marble/MaemoOfflineRouting* i did some research on how to do this, but no luck. Any pointers appreciated. Thanks again. (*OT: simple sum does not appear, even with all blockers off) :::::: Not sure about this. Could be good to turn this discussion into a section of project:offline :) - BTW, another approach would be turning the dump into the dict format and use the dict commandline client. I just give them a friendly warning that this isn't how we do things on Hitchwiki. However, this particular editor has ignored two prior requests to avoid mentioning himself, and I think the best policy would be reverting his edits until he realizes that something is wrong. In any event, we need some kind of exhortation in the article edit page to avoid writing in first person. I spend all of my time on Hitchwiki now asking people not to write in first person, I don't have any time left to actually edit articles (a lot of articles now are in need of a major cleanup). CRCulver (talk) 16:37, 25 August 2014 (UTC) == new bug == I cannot make any edits to the German part of hitchwiki, I always get the message: Es ist ein Datenbankabfragefehler aufgetreten. Thanks for making that change yesterday to unlock the database! I'm glad to be editing again; however, I've been dealing with a constant barrage of spam since then. Was there some sort of anti-spam setting that might have gotten changed? I noticed that IP editors can edit again, and create new pages, which I know wasn't the case before. Or are there any tools to more easily deal with spam? Cheers, Irningston (talk) 21:50, 15 October 2016 (UTC) How many good people? The only fucking thing you seem to be able to do is to remove the capability of people who care. Is there a way you're envisioning undoing the deletions -- manually? I see you've already started work, I would like to help. But can we do it in an organised way? Is the list on the Dxc talk page the beginning of organising it? Thanks for sharing your thoughts--Zenit (talk) 20:10, 5 May 2021 (CEST) :I moved the list here: Hitchwiki:Dxc_deletions:It's a matter of going through it and seeing if there are parts that can be copied back into the articles or possibly reverting edits. No easy solution. :The quick wins are the ones where dxc was the last contributor, showing as (current) in the list of contributions. Then you can quickly see what was removed and "rollback" if you're an admin. guaka (talk) 11:22, 13 May 2021 (CEST)  == Password change fails, potentially compromised password ==Hi Guaka! Long time! I recently got a spammy extortion email that included the password that I use here in plaintext. It's a really old password that I used many places like 15 years ago, so it's not certain that it was gleaned form HW, but it is paired with the email I used on HW, and I can't think of anywhere else that that is the case. I wanted to log in and change my password, but when I do so it seems like the password change doesn't stick. Zac<small>talk</small> :Hi Zac!:Strange. MediaWiki has been storing passwords as uniquely salted hashes for a very long time now. So even if an attacker would get a copy of the database, it would be very hard for them to figure out the actual password.:But let's dive into this... guaka (talk) 15:36, 15 June 2021 (CEST) == Helping with development == Hi Guaka, I would like to help with development on the maps. I have already prepared a mostly working solution that I can show to you if you have some time. I have been working on it on and off for a couple weeks now, but alone and was intending to open source it as soon as it was ready. It implements all existing data of the current hitchwiki maps, which I scraped (sorry!). Can we exchange private contact info somewhere? --Rebew (talk) 16:41, 12 October 2022 (CEST)  :You are welcome to scrape but this would have been easier: https://hitchwiki.org/dumps/:Email?guaka (talk) 23:57, 12 October 2022 (CEST) ::Yeah, that would've been easier.
