: The officer was pretty upfront that this was one of his department's usual ways of harrassing the city's noticeable homeless population -- if I had been only walking with my backpack instead of thumbing, he said, he would have cited me for trespassing on state property instead -- and that their policy wasn't meant for well-kempt and employed people like myself, but "rules are rules". Anyway, I'm happy to never go back to the US now. CRCulver (talk) 05:23, 15 May 2013 (CEST)

: Can understand that for sure. Not sure a "trespassing" citation would be any better than a citation for hitching, but doesn't remove the fact that in either case, it's a crock. Harmless, clean cut, and gainfully employed individual, you'd think the law enforcement would show some mercy. Luckily, I didn't have any bad experiences hitching around the south/southeast. Was hassled by the police only twice, in Texas and Louisiana but nothing came of either encounter, because I had an ID and no felonies, and I didn't stink (too badly, anyhow). I think also my Navy background aided me, in addition to the fact that I was hitchhiking by choice and for pleasure. A bad experience once can certainly be offputting for a long time, seems as though you're enjoying yourself abroad, so keep it up! Maybe you're onto something, perhaps the United States isn't the greatest nation in the world, as we're sometimes told...
