Hitchhiking out
South towards Singapore, Melaka
There is a big toll gate south of the city which is an excellent hitchhiking place, but not too easy to reach.
=== East towards Kavala and Istanbul (TR) 90 === This route is widely perceived to be difficult. If you are lucky it can be easy if you get to a Turkish truck. Take bus #27 from the centre (e.g. Kamara) until the very end of the line. [UPDATE: bus #83 no longer starts where bus #27 finishes. Instead ask your #27 bus driver where to get off for bus #83] Switch to bus #83 and go a few stops until you see the motorway. Get off when you see a JetOil rest area on the other side of the motorway. Just follow the bus and go under the motorway to reach the other side. Once you are thereFirst, rally take the petrol station personnel LRT to help you (they are very nice!)Sungai Besi. Show them your Istanbul (or Kavala or whatever) sign and ask them to tell you if they notice someone going to Turkey. Be prepared to convince the paranoid drivers that you are not wanted by the police and show them your passport. Getting a ride can take anything between one minute and five hoursThe fare is 1. If it just does not work at the petrol station see the options below 70 RM (thumbing up on the road etcJuly 2012). Also, From there should be a toll station (peage) about 15 km east of Lagynas, near Analipsi (where bus #83a is supposed to go). When you get have to walk south along the border you might want to switch to a passenger car because the truck could be stuck in customs for a whilemain roadAttention: The Jetoil rest area is now rebranded You have to 'BP Oil' in green colour.  Another option: Bus #83 goes all cross the way to Lagkadas. If you stay rail tracks on the bus until it reaches this small townyour right, you can try hitching out in either by jumping the direction of Kavalafences, Istanbul, etc. === North-West to Skopje which is illegal and somewhat dangerous (North Macedonia) === "Donit't bother to hitch hike to the border!!! There is s a free bus from the city centre to the border! These buses belong to the casinos high speed train line) or you can find at use the border just before Gevgelija. You can find theses buses on Tsimiski street. They are easy to recognize (the name of the casino bridge which is printed on the bus, and it is written "free shuttle"). The buses leave at 17:00 and 21:00 though, so it might be quicker to hit the road directly, but more comfortable taking the bus.   Take quite a bus #8 (or #31?) from Egnatias street in the centre to KTEL (last stop)walk. You can also take bus #45 which goes between KTEL Makedonia and KTEL Halkidiki (you want to go to [Makedoniain which direction?). Then switch to bus #81 which you can find on the upper platform. Afterwards]Walk further south, you can do different things. You can get off at will see a first bus stop after you drive over the highway Athens-Skopje - here. Be careful, the first big crossing you going to come to is the crossing with the ring road (you are going to driver underneath it) while only the next McDonalds on is the one you need (you are going to drive above it). Then you have to walk almost 2km backwards (if you walk fast it takes 20 minutes) and you can hitch on the junction to the highway to Skopje. However, if the bus goes into Agios Athanasios you can better get off and find your way from there (it seems that this bus goes differently depending whether it is #81 or #81A right and depending on some external stuff; you can talk to the driver to make sure)then a little neighbourhood.  Bus 81A from KTEL busstation to Agios Athanasios. Got off when it turns from the highway. From there hitched to Polykastro and another ride got me to the border. At the border asked the car in front The south end of me for a ride, which got me to Skopje. Standing on the highway there, it was very quiet === South to Athens === Take Buses #31, #12, #8 or #78 to the bus station called KTEL. From there take bus #80 or #80A to the village called Malgara. You can go down on the station "25 Martiou" which neighbourhood is the closest to the tolls (in Greek ikostis pemptis martiou if you want right next to ask the driver). There you can ask and find the toll station (in Greek diodia) easilygate. You'll have to walk about 2 km to find itThe motorway is elevated here, but then there is a possibility little hill with a little footpath that leads to get a ride even straight to Athens. Before you enter hole in the fence exactly at the motorway where parking place behind the toll station is, you will have to go through some fields. If it's night be careful, just before the motorway there is a small ridge that is a bit steep and there is water flowing down, you need to find your way around it. If it's day, gate from the fields where you can see a small canteen on the motorway, head start to that direction, you can bypass the ridge there very easily and also you don't need to jump the fence (easy to jump though) because there is an entrance/exit for the canteen. From the canteen you will see the tolls, they are less than 50 m awayhitch[edit] First of all, it appears greek bus stops do have several names. "25 Martiou" is written on the roadsign but on the bus, itIt's announced differently. I messed up because of that various times so always be sure ll take you about 45 minutes to ask walk from the driver to signal your stopLRT station. Finding the canteen There is probably a bit of trial and error, but still easily possible. In case you don't find the toll station, from the canteen go right (following the "Athen" roadsign) for about 1,5km to find a small (but picturesque) side stop (August 2017). [edit] Some of these buses don't go all the way to Malgara so you have to get out at one stop in the middle of nowheren before the bus turns back to Thessaloniki and wait for another bus with the same or different number that goes to Malgara. It can be stops a little confusing so the best way is closer to tell someone on the bus where you want to go and let them tell you when to get off for the next bus and the station ikostis pemptis martioutoll gate. (September 2019)
For those not wanting to take a bus or want to hitch closer to the city (and aren't scared to walk), go to the the A1 motorway going towards Athens. It runs right beside the city centre. Starting from near the train station after walking 2kms you will arrive at the international bus station. From there it's a 6km walk along the motorway very possible to where the E90 highway joins on to the A1 road to Athens. This is get a good spot due direct lift to the high amount of Turkish trucks coming straight Singapore from the border and bypassing the city as well as any traffic coming from the north. Stand at the end of the onramp where there is a shoulder for traffic to pull over and you can get a ride to Larissa or even Athensthis place.
=== West If you don't fancy a long walk or dicing with death/police by crossing rail tracks - this is a somewhat easier option. Take the LTR in the direction of Seremban and alight at Serdang. Once you exit the station turn left, and cross the busy carriageway over the footbridge. From here you could ask a taxi to take you to the toll station, or walk two minutes in the direction of traffic to the flyover. It might seem a little nervy at first, but the traffic is slowing up the hill and into the bend, and there's more than enough room just before the apex for vehicles to pull in. You're not quite on the right road yet for Singapore - but a sign saying highway E2 will get you a ride in no time - most probably dropped at the next toll station south. Looking for Stu 90 ===was picked up in five minutes here with a Singapore sign and taken to the highway.
Go Another save option and only a five minute walk is to take the LTR (metro/train station) to the same stop as mentioned above: Serdang (In total 10 RM from Petronas Towers area, which is also March 2020). Exit the inner-city bus train stationthrough the gates. From here, Than take bus 8 KTEL (the KTEL are walking bridge that leads you to the other side of the blue and white buses) rails, to Makedonia bus stationa playground on the opposite of the trainstation. From there, you You can catch already see the highway E2 from the bus #80 to bridge, walk straight in the end direction of the line, then follow motorway signs walking (approxhighway until you can't go further. 2km) Walk about 100 meters to the toll right and you'll find a small stairs where you can enter a rest station. Or rather than taking bus #80, just walk across the road (roundaboutR&R Serdang) till at the E2 highway. From there you come to an on-ramp where, according should easily get a ride in the direction of Melaka. It's also the right highway to Singapore. There are a couple of restaurants and toilets. In 2020 LivaWorldhitchhiker, is a a pretty good spot did this and walked to stop the entrance of the highway (at the end of the rest area). Within five minutes three carsstopped, the third car took him in the direction of Melaka.
In === North towards IgoumenitsaThailand ===There are three places which you should consider in order to get out of the city towards north.==== Option 1 ====The first one is a Shell gas station right behind the toll gate (it is at the Plaza tol Jalan Duta). In order to get there, you can take the KTM commuter train and get off at the Segambut station. From there, walk about 1.5km south on the highway. Unfortunately it's very easy to get lost in this area, in the middle of several highways, large roads, huge concrete bridges, and exchanges, with very few, useless road signs. Choose this option only if you have a ride GPS with trucks over you.==== Option 2 ====The other place you can consider is a toll gate near the sea to ItalyKTM station Sungai Buloh.
Get off the KTM commuter train at Sungai Buloh, walk down the stairs and you will come to a motorway. Turn and walk left then walk across the overpass to the other side of the motorway. If you are facing the train station you just came from, then walk right along the side of motorway. Initially you will walk under a motorway bridge, keep walking straight along the side of the motorway. It will get quite narrow but walk on the inside of the barrier. To your right you will see a flood water and then the toll booth you are trying to get to. Continue walking straight, you will come to a plant nursery on the side of the road. Go through the gates but keep walking in the same direction as before. You will come to a small pipe opening with water. You can easily climb and jump the fence to get over then continue walking. You will come to an over bridge where you can walk along to the right which will put you on the road to the toll gate. Walk along the side of road towards the toll gate, walk past it, run across to the other side and be sure to stand on the shoulder of the lane heading straight through, which is the "labuan besar utara selatan" (big road from north/south) ====Option 3 == North-East ==Take the KTM train heading north and get off at the last station called "Rawang", for just a couple of Ringgit (about 1$). You'll arrive at this town "Rawang" that is not on the highway but you can reach very easily, just a short 5 minutes walk, another main road going north (toward: Tapah, Ipoh, Cameron Highlands, Penang, Thailand border, etc.). That is probably not the perfect way to head north if you are in a rush, because you'll have to Sofia deal with short and indirect lifts until you get to Tapah (BGabout 100km north of Rawang) ===, but it's not a bad option, hitchhiking on that road is very easy.
Take the bus #27 A very good option from the centre Rawang stop is to it's final stop, where also other buses stop(you need #85). Then take bus #85(A, B or M) and you're already on your waythe roughly 20 minute walk to the main North-South highway. Almost any stop of this bus leaves Once you get off at a good hitchhiking pointthe station, but walk south along the nineteenth stop 21o chiliometro main road (21st kilometreJalan Rawang) is and follow the off ramp on the way to Serres and right side of the Bulgarian border road (traffic should be flowing in the opposite direction) up to Sandansky, Blagoevgrad, Sofia)Jalan Batu Arang. If you can't explain all Follow this to road, and take the driver just ask him to get off right at Assirusthe first lights onto Jalan Kuala Garing. It's Follow this road until you reach the second fork, and take a village near left (the motorwayroad should be a relatively unused, beat-up path). When You should see the highway ahead, and within 200 meters this road will take you ask the locals for through a narrow tunnel under the motorway use the german word "autobahn" instead of "motorway" or "highway". The road is E79 and If itdoesn's not t, you probably took a motorwayleft at the wrong fork. After the tunnel, especially after turn right and walk until you see the borderrest area... These city bus tickets for 2 rides cost 90 cents (that you don't even will have to pay) hop over the low barrier to get to the rest area. There, you will find a gas station, Starbucks, a hotel and other facilities...and most importantly, many cars heading North. Hitching a ride from there is very quick and take you quite some kilometres out of the city towards all destinationseasy.
Update: If you want to get to 21o chiliometro make sure to make that really clear to the busdriver since the bus doesn't stop at every stop nor says the stops out loud. Try to <b>not</b> end up in Assirus. Hitchhiking out of this village is a pain. And if you are unlucky enough to end up there: Don't ask locals for the highway because they will take you to the old highway. If you want to get to the new highway to Sofia ask for "autobahn". === East towards Kuantan and Kota Bharu===
[Update: getting off at Assirus has not proved a good idea, it's quite difficult to reach the new motorway from there. A kind local took me there on unpaved roads, and after I had to climb over a fence and descend on a rough path...] [Update: watch out! the 21o chiliometro and probably Assirus spots are not anymore the right spots to go towards Serres and Sofia. There is now the Egnatia highway and nobody drives this way and if he does it takes several hours to arrive to Serres. Also, in the point where the bus stops used to be a petrol station, also no more in use. ] OPTION 2Take bus 83 (any of them will get Now you there, even the express) from Aristotellous Square stop (on Egnatia Street). You want to wanna get off at the Kombo Gerokomeiou exit (Google maps doesnt show the bus stops this far north, but on the opposite side of the highway is a gas station called Derveni Gas S.A.). MAKE SURE you explain yourself to the bus driver E8 which takes you want to get off at this exit. Otherwise, he might not get off the highway here Bentong and the next stop is too far then either to walk back fromKota Bharu or Kuantan. Stand on the shoulder of the ramp. There is not a lot of traffic here, so it might To do this take you up to an hour to get a ride, but I think its worth it because most of the cars going as far as Bulgaria will get on the highway here. Good luck! === North KTM to Kilkis (Greece) ===Basically you need to take 2 buses. Very similar to the above direction to Sofia. But this time it is bus #27 / #27a Batu Caves and bus #84 / # 84a. You can change buses in two different places. * This way is faster as start walking east along road 28, you don't need to stay could either keep on bus #27 so long. Take bus #27 or #27a and get off at Minerva stop in Oreokastrou suburb. If walking east along road 28 until you walk some hundreds of meters from the bus stop where you get off, in the direction reach the bus was going, you will reach a crossroads McD and on your left you will see another bus stop. From there Petronas station 3km away or you can take bus #84.* This way is easier because you don't need to change bus stops, it is the way mentioned in the Northeast to Sofia section. Take the bus #27 make a sign that says Petronas or #27a from the centre the the final s top Platia Stavroupolis (Stavroupolis square). Then at the same place take bus #84 / #84a petrol station and you're already on your way. Stay on bus #84 whilst it passes through 2 villages, Liti and Melissochiori. When it is out of Melissochiori, at one point the bus will cross the hitch along road going to Kilkis and you will see signs for Kilkis28. When Once you are at get to the cross roads McD you can press the stop button on the bus and it will stop just after the cross. There is a bus stop there. Then you are at a great spot for hitching get a ride to Kilkis, Gallikos or even North Macedonia (but not the most common way to Skopje. it is a different border).within 5 minutes
Sleep
There are many hospitality network members Sleeping on the streets, while not necessarily suggested, is entirely possible with no problems. Find a closed business or Monorel station and lay down for the night. This might not work in areas such as the cityGolden Triangle, so try your luck therebut is viable in other areas.  Some have had luck asking Simply be aware of the traffic. Choose a good people at Mikropolis/Micropolis Social Spacearea and you should be safe. Good places include near the river in Chinatown behind some buildings is a rather secluded area, the large area of parks (see [http://wikimapiaDeer Park, Hibiscus Park, Orchid Park - also good for stashing your things) close to the National Mosque west of Chinatown for being close to downtown.org/#lat=40Outside the gates of the Batu Caves looking at the highway, turn right.6360852&lon=22You are heading toward the Monorel station.939539&z=17&l=0&m=s&v=9&show=/13098671/Mikropolis]). They were very friendly and could advise on where Once you reach a T-intersection, to squat your right are a series of benches with cover perfect for sleeping if you are on your way out of the nightcity.
=== Camping =Getting around ==Kuala Lumpur is a relatively small city and is perfectly walkable. Just make sure to not get lost.
The university campus in Thessaloniki is just in the city centre Kuala Lumpur has a fairly decent public transportation system comprised of trains and it's the perfect place buses. You can get from KL Sentral to sleep in your van/tent/sleeping bag, because it's the only green place in any major area of the city and because the police are not allowed to enter the university! There are few guards but don't have the right . The trains run from around 5AM to touch you. It's generally safe, though perhaps not suitable for a single femalemidnight.
It's not so safe anymore. The drug business moved there, as unbelievable There is an entirely free system of buses known as it soundsGoKL (People selling drugs and fighting over things related to them, passerbys get attackedgokl.com. If someone has a van maybe it's okay. But sleeping in a tent or sleeping bag is an invitation to get robbedmy/). It's the worst place These purple buses go to sleep, really. Try Seih Souvarious malls and tourist attractions, but can successfully be used to traverse the forest on the hills above majority of the city. Or any crowded place in the center.
We slept at a deserted camping space by the beach in Ag. Triada, which is really worth a visit. We even made a big fire at night and it didn't disturb anybody. This place is about 30km south of Saloniki and you can reach it within 1,5h by bus. From the famous ottoman tower take the bus to ikea. At the last stop ask for the bus to Perea and Ag. Triada. The last bus will pass by the airport and enter a cupple of villages before you get to Triada. Ask for the old camping at the beach, locals will guide you.== Stashing ==
== Public Transport ==At KL Sentral there are many lockers available for use. There are two different kinds - the ones near the escalator toward the exit, close to the bathrooms and those on the way to the departure gate for the KL Ekspres to the airport near the escalator heading toward the mall. The lockers toward KL Ekspres are MYR 2 for 24 hours, including overnight, and MYR 2 for every hour over 24 hours. The lockers near the bathroom range in price from MYR 5 to 20 and do not allow for overnight storage.
The tickets for the buses in the city cost 0.80€ and sometimes 0.90€. Blackriding is possible. If you speak parks to the controller west of Chinatown are potentially good for stashing things in a foreign language (showing that you're a tourist, not an illegal immigrant) they'll just leave you alone. If not, they first ask 30 euro for the tax, you say you don't have. Then they ask your id card, you say you don't have it with you and then they'll just give you a paper to note your name and address, where you can write any fake name. Or even simpler you can give your real passport and they are supposed to send you the bill to your country. It's 100% SURE that they will notbushes or trees.
There were big movements in this city about not paying for public transport. Many people don't pay and controls are rare. Spent a whole month in this city taking buses daily and never got checked.

Shower
I took one shower in one hospital 500 metres from the television broadcast antenna. There are three hospitals close to each other and I just tried one. After walking around in the hospital and talking friendly to some nurses I was able to take a shower and shave. May 2012. Len

There is also the "national swimming pool" which is open to the public for some hours during the day. Swimmers have to take a shower before entering the pool and nobody checks who enters them, so you might grab the chance for a bath there. It is located in the center of the city, near the University. Location on map: https://goo.gl/maps/q9XRl (Jan 2015) Last time checked, the national swimming pool was out of service. It worths to ask around about it first if it's still not in use. (July of 2018)

One even safer option is the student residence. Noone here checks who enters. Ever. Even if they see you like a complete stranger with a tons of baggage and ask you anything, just tell them that you are visiting a friend or whatever. After you enter, go upstairs to any floor and you'll find common baths everywhere. It is located near the swimming pool at the city center. You can enter 24h. Location on map: https://goo.gl/maps/H8WZU (jan 2015)

Free food
Thessaloniki is perhaps the only place in the world where you can eat everyday for free easily. Next to the campus of Aristotles university, Egnatia street, after the crossroad with 3rd September street there is the university canteen. Ask anybody for fititiki leschi/φοιτητική λέσχη. There you can find a free full meal twice a day. 12.00-15.00 and 18.00-20.00. These free meals are provided for the university students, but even if you're not one, you don't have to pay and you don't have to show a student ID or any document. Just follow the queue, take the food and eat it. There's never any checks. There's nothing to be afraid of, just try to look more or less like a student. Only disadvantage is that it is closed on weekends, summer holidays and not-working days for the university in general. Picture of the building here.

Alternative entrance: when you are there look to your right. At the end of the grass there is a stair case, you can go up directly to the dining hall.
I don't think you really need this because it's very is easy to enter trough the main door.
