This way also leads to the main highway going north to Lisbon and Porto.
Take the N125, there's a gas station just out of town, see the marker. From there you can get basically anywhere in Portugal.

Tavira has a nice island - Ilha de Tavira - with beautiful waves, and mosquitos. The cheap ferry goes regularly from the coast.
It's quite a walk from the city center of Tavira to the coast, but it's easy go get a lift - at least on your way back.
