Going west
Strasbourg is one of a major city in France situated next to the bigger cities of FranceGermanborder. It is the siege official seat of the European Parliament, and pretty bourgeois.
In theory it seems doable to hitchhike directly from the centercentre, as there is the entrance to several highwaysmotorways. However, the people of the city are not very hitchhikehitchhiker-friendly, so it is better to directly go to a petrol station on the highwaymotorway. It should be noted that there is barely any traffic around and out of the city on Sunday mornings. This may be the case with other parts of France.

Public transport is very cheap for a western European city. A 24 hour pass is only 3,50 costs EUR4.30, for 4,80 EUR 6.40 you get a 24 hour pass for 3 persons(August 2015). See fares.

Going east (Germany) 5
You can take the regional train going to The German town of Kehl which (just over the border to the East) is already in a good place to pick up traffic to the A5 (all directions), especially from the petrol station at the entrance to the B28 ([[Germany]http://hitchwiki.org/maps/?place=7333] ).  Walking (from Strasbourg centre) to Kehl takes about 50 minutes if you go the shortest route (check Google maps!). Strasbourg tram reaches Kehl center since 2018, the price is the same as within Strasbourg, 2€ Alternatively, you can take the regional train (around 6 minutes for 2-about EUR 3 euro) or the tram (line D, 20 minutes, 1.80€). In  By train, for 2 euro more, you can continue after Kehl till Appenweier. From there you've got a big road going directly can walk or hitchhike to the motorway A5 - and everyone who's coming from petrol station "Rasthof Renchtal" (2,5 km check the route on maps.google.com or see FranceRenchtal is using this roadfor details ). You also find It can be a petrol station!good alternative to Kehl because in 30 minutes more, you're on the German motorway network.
Also=== Going North (Metz, Saarbrücken) 4 and South (Mulhouse, Switzerland) 35 ===Take the tram (red line A) to go from Stasbourg to Kehl, you can use Parc Malraux and then the bus (line #21 ; one bus every 30 min13)direction Lingolsheim gare and get out at Ostwald Eglise. It's a bit longer but quite cheaper From the bus stop walk up to the entrance of the church (1,30 euro instead of 3,50 "Église" is French for train) and it stops in several places from "Ancienne Douannechurch" ) nearby. Facing the entrance just walk down Rue de l'Église parallel left to the east side of church. Keep on walking until you reach Rue d'Illkirch which leads to the bridge over the city motorway (useful if see directions). If you want to go south, don't cross the bridge: There is a steep path down to the petrol station. If you are in want to go north cross the eastern part of bridge and access the city)other petrol station.
By train, for 2 euro more, Heading south you can continue after Kehl till Appenweiermight want to avoid the "steep path" which leads to the petrol station. From there Facing the entrance of the church you can also walk or hitchhike to the petrol station "Rasthof Renchtal" (2left,5 km check down Rue de Lorraine. At the end of Rue de Lorraine turn right and follow the street until you reach the route on A35 motorway (see /xcuvr directions). It can be There is a good alternative direct entrance to Kehl because in 30 minutes more, youthe service station for traffic going southre on the German motorway networktowards Mulhouse and Switzerland.
=== Going North (Metz, Saarbrücken) and South (Mulhouse, Switzerland) ===Take the tram (red line) to Illkirch Lixenbuhl and then In September 2013 I took the bus (line 2) to Ostwald Eglise. From the bus stop, with your back to If you face the church, turn right and walk down just follow the road towards parallel left of the big house around some green fields at church. This road leads to a bridge. You will reach the junctionbridge in 10 minutes of walking. You then turn right and If you keep walking up this road parallel want to go to Switzerland, do not cross the bridge. Just before crossing the bridge, there is a narrow steeple path going down on your left side. This path leads to the Nachtweid foreststation. You will find it in 2 minutes walking. All the best, Robbel
"In August 2018, I hitchiked toward Mulhouse via the D1083. Take the bus line 62 (at the end of the A small road runs along its edge tram line : Graffenstaden) and leads to stop at Lipsheim Gare. There you can walk up north for 3/5 minutes, on the first petrol D1083, toward a gas station on ! Eventually the road joins the N83, and the A35 motorway. This is for traffic going SOUTH towards Mulhouse and Switzerland. Good luck From Sarah"
Across from this is === Going North (Metz, Saarbrücken, Paris) ===Take a regional train direction Brumath/Mommenheim and make sure it stops at Stephansfeld. From there you can walk within 15 min to the second petrol station for the NORTH'Air de Service Brumath on the A4 and start hitchhiking straight at the petrol station. The trainticket from Strasbourg to Stephansfeld costs EUR 3.90 (Metz, Saarbrucken, etc2016). You can access this from may have to jump a muddy path beside fence to enter the bridgeactual petrol station, but it is not too tall and in June 2016 there was a convenient hole in it.
=== Going North Alternatively, just walk (Metz, Saarbrucken10 minutes from the centre) to Place de Haguenau, Paris) ===Take a regional train direction Brumath and make sure this one stops at Stephansfeld. From there you can walk within 15 min to the gas station on entrance of the A4 (there is a cycle path that leads right next to it if you don't like contending with the cars). There is a lot of space for people to stop and start hitchhiking straight it is the best way to head north from the centre. Mind you, do NOT hitchhike at the gas stationPlace de Haguenau as there is absolutely no shoulder to pull over.

# Join the A4 by the "going north route" (see upper). Good solution for Paris.
# Join the N4: take the "bus interurbain" #205,#206 or #207 from "Ancienne synagogue-Les Halles" or "Gare Centrale" to Ittenheim (eur 1,.80 euros). From Ittenheim's bus stop, walk till the entry of the village (3 minutes), and you're on the best spot of the N4 to leave Strasbourg. This road has the advantage to be free of fees so many cool people use it. I recommend it to go to Metz and Nancy cause you don't loose a lot of time compared to motorways and you have many more chances to get a lift. Very efficient, I never waited more than 5 minutes there!  == Trashwiki & Nomadwiki == nomad:Strasbourg trash:Strasbourg
