Strasbourg is one of a major city in France situated next to the bigger cities of FranceGermanborder. It is the siege official seat of the European Parliament, and pretty bourgeois.
In theory it seems doable to hitchhike directly from the centercentre, as there is the entrance to several highwaysmotorways. However, the people of the city are not very hitchhikehitchhiker-friendly, so it is better to directly go to a petrol station on the highwaymotorway.
It should be noted that there is barely any traffic around and out of the city on Sunday mornings. This may be the case with other parts of France.  ==Getting around==

Public transport is very cheap for a western European city. A 24 hour pass is only 3,50 costs EUR4.30, for 4,80 EUR 6.40 you get a 24 hour pass for 3 persons(August 2015). See fares.
==Hitching Hitchhiking out=====Going northeast (Germany) 5 ===Go south, taking a tram southwards The German town of Kehl (probably Ajust over the border to the East), right is a good place to pick up traffic to the end of the line. From there you walk west for a whileA5 (all directions), and then you can find especially from the petrol station on at the side entrance to go norththe B28 ().
The above tip Walking (from Strasbourg centre) to Kehl takes about 50 minutes if you to go the petrol station opposite the one mentioned for "Going south"shortest route (check Google maps!). If you want to start hitchhiking north of the cityStrasbourg tram reaches Kehl center since 2018, you can take a train to Brumath (3,40€) or Stephansfeld (a little bit closer but less frequent) and than walk to the petrol station on price is the motorway. See map for location.same as within Strasbourg, 2€
===Going east (Germany A5)===You Alternatively, you can take the regional train going to Kehl which is already in Germany (around 6 minutes for 2-about EUR 3 euro)or the tram (line D, 20 minutes, 1. In Kehl you've got a big road going directly to the motorway A5 - and everyone who's coming from France is using this road80€). You also find a petrol station!
AlsoBy train, for 2 euro more, to go from Stasbourg to you can continue after Kehl, till Appenweier. From there you can use walk or hitchhike to the bus petrol station "Rasthof Renchtal" (line #21 ; one bus every 30 min2,5 km check the route on maps.google.com or see Renchtal for details ). It's can be a bit longer but quite cheaper (1,good alternative to Kehl because in 30 euro instead of 3minutes more,50 for train) and it stops in several places from "Ancienne Douanne" to the east side of the city (useful if you are in 're on the eastern part of the city)German motorway network.
By train=== Going North (Metz, for 2 euro moreSaarbrücken) 4 and South (Mulhouse, you can continue after Kehl till AppenweierSwitzerland) 35 ===Take the tram (red line A) to Parc Malraux and then the bus (line 13) direction Lingolsheim gare and get out at Ostwald Eglise. From there you can the bus stop walk or hitchhike up to the petrol station entrance of the church ("Église" is French for "Rasthof Renchtalchurch" (2,5 km check ) nearby. Facing the entrance just walk down Rue de l'Église parallel left to the route church. Keep on walking until you reach Rue d'Illkirch which leads to the bridge over the motorway (see /Me0pt directions). It can be If you want to go south, don't cross the bridge: There is a good alternative steep path down to Kehl because in 30 minutes more, the petrol station. If youwant to go re on 'north cross the bridge and access the German motorway networkother petrol station.
===Going North and South===Take Heading south you might want to avoid the tram (red line) "steep path" which leads to Illkirch Lixenbuhl and then the bus (line 2) to Ostwald Eglisepetrol station. From Facing the entrance of the bus stop, with your back church you can also walk to the churchleft, turn right and walk down Rue de Lorraine. At the road towards the big house around some green fields at the junction. You then end of Rue de Lorraine turn right and follow the street until you keep walking up this road parallel to reach the the Nachtweid forestA35 motorway (see directions). A small road runs along its edge and leads There is a direct entrance to the first petrol service station on the A35 motorway. This is for traffic going south towards Mulhouse, Swityerland, etc. Across from this is the second petrol station for the north (Metz, Saarbrucken, etc). You can access this from a muddy path path beside the bridgeand Switzerland.
In September 2013 I took the bus to Ostwald Eglise. If you face the church, just follow the road parallel left of the church. This road leads to a bridge. You will reach the bridge in 10 minutes of walking. If you want to go to Switzerland, do not cross the bridge. Just before crossing the bridge, there is a narrow steeple path going down on your left side. This path leads to the station. You will find it in 2 minutes walking. All the best, Robbel "In August 2018, I hitchiked toward Mulhouse via the D1083. Take the bus line 62 (at the end of the A tram line : Graffenstaden) and stop at Lipsheim Gare. There you can walk up north for 3/5 minutes, on the D1083, toward a gas station! Eventually the road joins the N83, and the A35. Good luck From Sarah" === Going North (Metz, Saarbrücken, Paris) ===Take a regional train direction Brumath/Mommenheim and make sure it stops at Stephansfeld. From there you can walk within 15 min to the petrol station Air de Service Brumath on the A4 and start hitchhiking straight at the petrol station. The trainticket from Strasbourg to Stephansfeld costs EUR 3.90 (2016). You may have to jump a fence to enter the actual petrol station, but it is not too tall and in June 2016 there was a convenient hole in it.  Alternatively, just walk (10 minutes from the centre) to Place de Haguenau, and walk to the entrance of the A4 (there is a cycle path that leads right next to it if you don't like contending with the cars). There is a lot of space for people to stop and it is the best way to head north from the centre. Mind you, do NOT hitchhike at the Place de Haguenau as there is absolutely no shoulder to pull over. ===Going west===
# Join the A4 by the "going north route" (see upper). Good solution for Paris.
# Join the N4: take the "bus interurbain" #205,#206 or #207 from "Ancienne synagogue-Les Halles" or "Gare Centrale" to Ittenheim (eur 1,.80 euros). From Ittenheim's bus stop, walk till the entry of the village (3 minutes), and you're on the best spot of the N4 to leave Strasbourg. This road has the advantage to be free of fees so many cool people use it. I recommend it to go to Metz and Nancy cause you don't loose a lot of time compared to motorways and you have many more chances to get a lift. Very efficient, I never waited more than 5 minutes there!
