Take the metro to the last stop of (blue line 1 (red) called to Tsarigradsko mall/congress centreshose, that is already on the big bd tsarigradsko to PlovdivInter Expo Center. You have Metro (shop, mall) on your right, keep walking 1 km, you will reach a traffic light that is perfect to hitch, never waited more than 5 minutes. Perfect stop.* (July 2017) The directions above were pretty wrong -- the person below probably got lost like I did, and doubled down on the mistake by trying for Istanbul in one hop. I fixed it some but there's probably room for improvement, since I never actually made it to the correct petrol station.
* (May 2016) Waiting times were much longer than 5mins. Could not get a ride to Istanbul. Waited for 2hrs with no luck. Walk is significantly more than 1km, more like 2km. Not recommended for travelling direct to Istanbul. Best to aim shorter. I spoke to other people in Sofia and this spot does work, however, it is absolutely essential to start as early as possible. My own attempt from 11am was already too late to catch traffic heading that far.
