===== First option =====
Take metro to the last stop of line 1 (red) called Tsarigradsko mall/congress centre, that is already on the big bd tsarigradsko to Plovdiv. You have Metro (shop, mall) on your right, keep walking 1 km, you will reach a traffic light that is perfect to hitch, never waited more than 5 minutes. Perfect stop.
* (May 2016) Waiting times were much longer than 5mins. Could not get a ride to Istanbul. Waited for 2hrs with no luck. Walk is significantly more than 1km, more like 2km. Not recommended for travelling direct to Istanbul. Best to aim shorter. I spoke to other people in Sofia and this spot does work, however, it is absolutely essential to start as early as possible. My own attempt from 11am was already too late to catch traffic heading that far.
