Russian is more widely understood, but not necessarily liked.
Young people can speak English and it's not so bad with English in bigger towns. Of course in villages it can become difficult to understand each other. Hitchhiking in Slovak means autostop.
Two weeks ago I was in Slovakia. At the gas station I was asking people. After 2 houers hours some cops with were standing there told , telling me that hitchhaking hitchhiking in Slovakia is lillegalillegal (everywhere!!!) and driver can get 100 euro penalty(new low). After 4 houers hours the cops live left the station and some Czech took me. He told me thet that this is true...
