You can basically try it a lot closer to the city than the hitchiking spots [[User:fabzgy|fabzgy]] mentioned. The Panamerican Highway passes right through the city. For long distance trips [[User:fabzgy|fabzgy]] recommends the spots on the map because there most of the [[Valle Central]] traffic is filtered out.
If you want Go to go in direction [[San Isidrio]] or [[Panama]] the Terminal Caribe, from there 100 meters north. At the next intersection take a bus from '''San José''' to ''Cartago'' (300 C) right and ask the bus driver to drop after 120 m you off arrive at the peage stationhitchhiking spot.
