Hitching Out
South towards Bauska, Jelgava, Kaunas, Vilnius
If you want to get towards the south then the best way is to get out of the city center first. There are several possibilities:
* For about the equivalent of 1 euro, you can take a regional train to Jelgava, a much smaller city about an hour Southward. From there, it is very easy to hitchhike toward Šiauliai, Lithuania, and points beyond.* From RIX airport, ask for try getting a lift to the from cars registered as 'LT'. * Take tram #10 towards Bišumuiža and get out at the stop Ziepniekalna iela. You will see a petrol station just around the corner. Very few cars are actually going to Lithuania. Focus on the registration plates marked 'LT'. From the oil station, do not refuse a short lift as there is one gaz gas station 20km away to lead you straight to Vilnius or Kaunas/Poland. Asking people there is usually more successful than standing at the street.
* Take bus #23 (opposite Stockmann shopping center, stop called 13.janvāra iela) towards Baloži. Before the bus turns right to Baloži, at the stop Sūkņu stacija go off and you've got a traffic light and a bus stop for stopping cars - everyone's going towards Bauska!
* Take a microbus to Kekava from the central bus station, go till Kekava and take there the main road E67/A7 in the direction of Bauska. Just find a good spot and good luck!
*Cross the main bridge of Riga which goes southwards. You can walk there, but possibly there is a nice bus or minibus you can take. You keep on going until there is a crossroad with the A7, there follow the highway towards Jelgava.
North towards Pärnu, Tallinn (Estonia)
Take tram #6 from the city center (stop called Merķeļa iela) to the final stop called Jugla - there you will find the road to the north including petrol station for asking, traffic-light, bus stop and McDonald's (toilet). It is not the best idea to hitchhike after the speed limit sign 70 - cars are already going quite fast and stopping a car can cause a crash. Note, that about 750 metres farther (after crossing bridge) from the traffic light is a nice big layby where cars can stop. If you're heading for Estonia have an EST sign - it will make all go a lot quicker.

South-East towards Daugavpils, Belarus
Take the bus #18 to Pagrieciens uz Darziniem. You'll be at Maskavas Iela near traffic lights, where cars drive slowly and you easily get a ride.
