There are Maps.me is a lot of technical "toys"free and open-source mobile maps app for Android, iOS and BlackBerry. You can select a certain area and download this map to your device. Once that process is finished you can help you to make hitchhiking easieruse it offline - no internet, safer mobile data or just collect informations and statistics about your tripssim-card needed anymore.
Same to the Apps you might want to use as your navigation software. You could use the built in software that usually requires data or you could get a free app and download the apps in advanced. I have been travelling traveling for years and fortunately during the first days I found this great map. And I am still using it always when I go anywhere by hitchhiking.
