It's cheaper to just get the train from Atocha to station San Fernando which is nearby Madrid.
Behind the San Fernando train station there is an entrance on the motorway where you can easily hitchhike from.
I really liked the spot because it's a few kilometers away from the landing track of the Barajas airport and you can see/take pictures of airplanes while they are headed for landing ( 50-100meters 100 meters from ground ).
The train ticket to San Fernando costs 1.45 euro.
Attention: The San Fernando station is on the line towards Alcala de Henares or Guadalajara. Currently its served by local trains in the Atocha Renfe train station on platform 3.

Take a metro to the station Pinar de Chamartín (1 euro). Walk on the calle Arturo Soria, cross the M-11, follow the Camino de la Fuente de la Mora, then turn left in the avenudo de la Manotera. It's an upper-class office area full of good-looking young people driving Mini and BMW 120d. There is a Cepsa petrol station on the left 300 meters further, but [[user:Grégoire|Grégoire]] didn't find it very welcoming and preferred to stick his thumb out at the end of the street, where he got a ride to another petrol station further on the A1 30 minutes later. The spot is directly in the sun, so it's also a perfect place to get suntanned in the middle of the Winter if you hitchhike between 10am and 4pm.
