I decided to add this extra part as me and my friend tried to hitch out of Luxembourg towards Germany on a Sunday with no success whatsoever - we were stuck on the Avenue JFK for 3 hours and not one single car stopped. I think the above option is only really good during the week when the traffic flow to Germany is really high".
What I did in the end was take the number 16 bus to the stop just before the airport. This bus stop is next to an entrance to the highway and you can either stand in front of the bus stop with a sign or stand on a little traffic light island at the entrance (which I did) so that you get all the traffic going towards Trier that is coming from both directions.
I waited for about 10 minutes for a ride that took me to the huge gas station on the border and from there I got my next ride of 150km within 5 minutes of waiting.
