It is a member state of the European Union as well as the Schengen Agreement.
Many Most people speak both not only the local language, Lëtzebuergish (Luxembourgeois), but also French , German and German, besides LetzebuergischEnglish fluently.
stub== Great for long distances ==Luxembourg is a great country to catch a long distance ride, due to its central location in Europe. Many drivers stop here to take advantage of the low duties on fuel, alcohol, and chocolate. Most motorways leaving Luxembourg have a large service area which are the best places to get ongoing lifts. However, much of the traffic are drivers coming from just a few kilometres over the border in matter to get cheaper fuel. Therefore, for long distance ride, it may be wise to have a sign specifying your direction and destination or simply to preselect the drivers according to the immatriculation of their car in matter to have a less frustrating experience.
Especially Aire de Capellen Sud is great. guaka (talk) has found direct rides to Avignon, Valencia and even Morocco, with waiting times of less than 1 hour. Local hitchhiking in the countryside of Luxembourg is somewhat less straightforward as hitchhiking is not so common by local inhabitants. Tickets for local transport across the country, both trains and buses are only EUR 2.00 for two hours, with unlimited transfers, or EUR 4 for one day. This includes some buses going abroad (e.g. to Bastogne). The cheap public transport and the low chances of locals stopping for you makes it best to simply take a bus towards one of the petrol stations on the motorway when going further away out of the country. == Personal experience ==:We (a couple - man and wonam) traveled for more than a week in Luxembourg, almost all by thumb. No difference between TO capital Luxembourg_(City) or OUT of it. We've got a lift always at less than 15 minutes, even after a sunset. Twice, even when we were three. Lovely green country with many beautiful landscapes and very nice people. --Mik013 August 2016== Living ==Luxembourg is a very expensive country. Restaurants and accommodation is expensive. The cheapest youth hostel in Luxembourg City will be EUR 20 per night. Luxembourg has a huge financial sector - many banks, insurances etc. As an anti-capitalist you may feel a little cold there ;) Yet, there are now quite a few entries on dumpster diving spots in Luxembourg.
