Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, one of the smallest and nicest capitals in Europe.

Hitchhiking out
Hitchiking out of Ljubljana is relatively easy, in all directions, Standing on the Autostrada on-ramp.
Northeast towards Maribor, Austria (Graz, Vienna), Hungary
From the main street, west of the train station (Slovenska cesta, Dunajska cesta), take buses 6, 8 or 11 in direction north. Get off at the stop "Smelt", at the "World Trade Center" tower. Walk further on towards the motorway, then right after the fountain. You will see the road forking, the left lane going down to the motorway, the right lane going higher up. Stand with your sign in the middle between the two lanes. Even though it might look a bit strange, this is the most common spot and it's easy for drivers to see you and there's enough space for one car to safely stop there.
=== Northeast towards Maribor, Graz, Vienna (Austria), Hungary 57 === Option 1: World trade center, Recommended From the center (Slovenska Cesta, Dunajska Cesta), take a bus number 6 (direction Črnuče), 8 (dir. Brnčičeva) or 11 (dir. Ježica) and get off at the stop "Smelt", close to the WTC tower. Walk a bit further on towards the motorway and turn right at the crossroads. Right after the fountain you will see the road forking, the left lane going down to the motorway, the right lane going higher up. Stand with your sign in the middle between the two lanes, or on the pavement next to the parking place entrance. Even though the first option might look a bit strange, this is the most common spot and it's easy for drivers to see you and there's enough space for one car to safely stop there. Option 2: Letališka Take bus no 27 towards "Letaliska" and get out at "Jarše". Continue following "Šmartinska cesta" about 400 meters and turn right from the traffic lights. There is a bus stop right after. Most of the cars passing now are going towards the highway. You can also take bus no 2 to "Nove Jarše" from Southern part of Slovenska cesta. The last stop is the mentioned hitchhiking spot.  === Northwest towards Kranj, Bled, Villach, Salzburg (Austria), Munich (Germany) 61 ===

The following hitch hiking way maybe useful. However I have to warn you I was caught by police with this way of hitch hiking.
(here's my own experience)
In Slovenia people are not friendly to hitch hiker, I wait at the place in good time good weather for 2 hours, no one take me.
And afterwards there came the police and took me away. Yhe said it forbidden to do on high way and they can charge me for 300€ fines.
So believe me or not, take the train or find other solution will be better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Direction north-west there is the motorway E61/A2 towards Kranj through the Karawanken Tunnel (Slovenian: Predor Karavanke) or over the pass over the border to Villach (slov.: Beljak) in Austria and further on on the Tauern-motorway to Salzburg and over to Germany. It is the way that is used by most of those numerous Germans that go to the Croatian Croatian coast for holidayshollidays.
This motorway E61/A2 starts from the Ljubljana bypass. The best way to join this motorway is from the street Celovška cesta, at the bus stop Šentvid(stand in the corner before the bus stop!!). You can get Get there easily by taking bus number 1(direction Vižmarje), 25(dir. Medvode), or 8 (dir. Gameljne) from the city centre in direction of Vižmarje. You can hitchhike at the stop, but make sure you have a sign. Even better spot is a tunnel about 500 m ahead. In that tunnel there is an extra lane for cars to stop and you can catch cars going from 3 different directions into the tunnel, unlike the bus stop, where you only cover one direction. To get there keep walking away from the centre and turn right at the traffic light where the cars leave the street and join the highway. The signs are visible from the stop. After you turned right you should see the tunnel. It is good to start at the end because cars have a lot of time to see you. If people who pick you up don't go as far as you like, you can get a lift as far as the first "Petrol" gas station on the highway (17km away) or the former toll station Torovo and keep hitchhiking there. There is also a petrol station at the Radovljica-exit (right before Bled) which is useful for getting into Austria. Another option is to get dropped at ~25km from Šentvid, there's a great hitchhiking spot here on a ramp where there's enough room for a car to stop (GPS 46.267470, 14.339623).
Southwest towards Koper, Nova Gorica, Rijeka, Pula (Croatia), (Italy) 61
Note from Wincak :The tunnel is already after the highway sign. Hitchhiking on the bus stop seems to be a better idea as most of the cars go from this direction anyway. Also'Option 1: Highway entrance Dolgi Most, if you try to get to the end of the tunnel, go through it, not around. There is a fence.Recommended
South or west towards Koper, Nova Gorica, Rijeka, Pula, Italy
From the city center (Dunajska cesta, Slovenska cesta) take bus number 6 or 6B in direction south, till the stop Dolgi most (last stop in case of #6), which is just after big crossroads with motorway signs, before the bridge above the road. Go back to the crossroads and you will see the entry lane into the motorway. There will also be an entry to a parking of a small house, stand on the side there with your sign (you will see where everybody else stands...).
From the city centre (Dunajska cesta, Slovenska cesta) take the bus number 6, 1, 1D (direction Dolgi most - last stop) or 6B (dir. Notranje gorice), to bus stop "Dolgi Most". You will be dropped off on a large parking lot right next to a motorway bridge. There is also a Bicike(lj) (bike rental) station nearby, if you prefer it to taking the bus. On the opposite side of the road, there is a busy motorway entrance with a great hitchhiking spot where cars can easily see you and stop safely. Slovenians use this ramp to go to the seaside, so waiting times should not be too long. If your destination is Venice or further, the easiest way is via Nova Gorica(town on the walkable distance from Gorizia, Ita): use sign GO and ask to be dropped at the service area on the border. For Trieste it doesn't work well with TS sign - best option might be to use KP sign and then ask the driver to drop you off at Kozina exit (go right in the crossroads after toll booths). It's only 3 km from the border and on the main Rijeka-Trieste road.
If your destination is Rijeka, take also rides going to Postojna or further west. Get out at Postojna exit and from there walk across the highway from there (use the bridge). There is a good spot to hitchhike southwards just few hundred meters after the bridge.
=== Southeast towards Novo mesto, Zagreb ===Option 2: Rest stop Barje - North (Sever)
Hitchhiking in this direction seems Catch bus 9 to be more difficult comparing bus stop "Pot Na Rakovo Jelšo" and go straight to other directionwhere bus went follow Cesta Dveh Cesarev street (dont turn the left side where bus went after 100 metres). Asphalt road will bring you to Barja rest stop woth gas station. You have two options Alot of cars and trucks are going to follow this route:Italy from here, easy to get a ride west. Just ask people at the gas station. There is shower in fuel station price 3 eur and places for wild camping around.
1. You can also try your luck at the service area "Barje", in direction of Zagreb. This service area is on the Ring around Ljubljana and is very well-served by a lot of long-distance drivers. To get there take bus number 1 or 1B in direction Mestni Log from the center. Go off one stop before last, called "Koprska". Continue straight (the bus takes a turn just before the stop "Koprska" - don't follow it, go straight on!) on the street Cesta v Mestni log, after 2 minutes you will cross a bridge over a small river. Continue straight and cross the motorway over the bridge, and on the left side the service area is about 500 m away. There is a golf course between you and the service area, which you can cross by climbing its fences (not too high) if the personal allows you, which hasn't always been the case. If they don't, you should take an immediate left directly after crossing Option 3: Fuel station on the road to highway (you're still on the bridge at that point), descending to the guardrail. You are now between the golf course's fence and the highway, which is quite a narrow path at some points. After a few hundred metres, you'll get to the resting area. Hitchhiker Looking for Stu discovered that bus 1 will drop you by the side of the golf course at what appeared to be the last stop before returning to town. No problem hopping the fences and crossing the course away from the busy motorway edge. 2. You can go to the on-ramp of the motorway at the edge of the city. Not many cars go in this direction, and the ones that do usually do not enter the motorway here - this on-ramp mostly serves inter-urban traffic, so you might have to wait a lot of time. From the city centre (Slovenska cesta, bus stop "Pošta") take bus line 3 in direction of "Rudnik" (south), and get off at the final stop. In front of you there will be the motorway entrance, which will be a turn left. Cross the street and on the side of the on-ramp road, on your left, you will see a small asphalt surface where all the cars pass, and there you can stand and hitchhike easily.
Notice - If you are hitchhiking towards Novo mesto, pay attention that you are hitchhiking on Near the high-way entrance (the turn left) crossing of streets: "Pot Na Rakovo Jelšo" and not on the old road, which is continuing straight ahead. If you are hitchhiking to Zagreb, pay attention to the "Crossing bordersBarjanska Cesta" section in the Slovenia pagethere is a fuel station with a lot of cars heading towards Koper.
If you really cannot get a lift out=== Southeast towards Novo mesto, the train is fairly cheap- eur 16.00 one-way to Zagreb and lasts (Croatia) ===
== Sleeping == Option 1: Rest stop Barje - South (Jug) This service area is on the Ring around Ljubljana and is very well-served by a lot of long-distance drivers. To get there take a bus number 1 or 1B in direction of "Dolgi most" from the center. Get off the bus on the stop "Mestni Log" and walk back in the direction of the highway. When you reach the overpass look for a very small and steep pathway on your right, starting next to the overpass. Descend down to the fence, turn right and walk a few metres untill you reach an unlocked door. When you're on the other side of the fence, you should already be able to see the rest stop. Follow the pathway for another 100 m or so and there you are. There is a shower for 3€ and places for wildcamping around.
It * MartinJ888 August 2022: Works very well. The door is possible still unlocked! Took us about 1 hour to sleep in the upside part of Tivoli park which is half an hour walking from the city centre. It is not so flat terrain, but if you search well you should find nice spots, cleanget a ride, safe and quietasking people.
It is possible to sleep in Metelkova mesto (at the intersection of the street Metelkova *JackMcJackJack August 2023: This gas station and has been demolished and Masarykova) people rarely stop here, avoid this place. The on ramp beside the grass between Jalla Jalla Club and Tiffany ClubLidl on Pot Rdečega križa is a 20min walk away from Mestni Log bus station. Most people here are heading south, but we found a ride to Šmarje - Sap gas station after an hour.
It might be possible to sleep in the locker room of the train station, a policeman just comes in the morning saying "Wake up", but on occasion security people have entered and told that it's not possible to sleep there.Option 2: Highway entrance Barjanska cesta
You could also sleep near Catch bus 9 in direction of "Barje" from the Sava River, it's a bit far from center or the train station, but it's unlikely that anyone will bother youand exit on the final stop "Barje". Take bus 19/19B till You can hitchhike next to the parking lot or walk down the north end "Tomacevobarjanska" street and then take try to find a better place. That's the road that goes down and turn rightentrance people from Ljubljana would use to enter the highway going south, so this spot might be less suitable for long distance picks, you should but perfect to get out of the city and pass by some farms and there you have the river where you can even swim if you have the braveryto Novo Mesto.
== Internet ==Internet cafes are quite expensive in Ljubljana (about eur 4/hr). You can surf for free at KiberPipa, a cyber centre located at Kersnikova 6. You can also surf for free using computer at the student info centre, located next to Preseren square, on Trubarjeva ulica. There is also a club called KMŠ on Trzaska street that has free internet access and wi-fi (you just have to order coffee).Option 3: Highway entrance Rudnik
FABRKA KLUB Poljanska street 9Not many cars go in this direction, close to Dragons bridge and the ones that do usually do not enter the motorway here - this on-ramp mostly serves inter- free internet access and WiFi (urban traffic, so you just might have to order coffee)wait a bit longer. From the city centre take a bus line 3 in direction of "Rudnik", and get off at the final stop. In front of you there will be the motorway entrance.KAMERA KLUB Kolodvorska Cross the street 6and on the side of the on-ramp road, on your left, close to railway station - free internet access you will see a small asphalt surface where all the cars pass, and there you can stand and hitchhike easily. Pay attention that you're hitchhiking on the highway entrance (the left turn) and WiFi not on the old road (you just have Dolenjska cesta), which is continuing straight ahead. Drivers going to order coffee)Kočevje and Ribnica use this entrance.
Additionally, At the back of the train station, right before the tracks, there is a tourist information computer which can be used for free internet surfing by clicking in the search tab, typing what your looking for, and finding it in the results (there is no URL bar provided).== Sleeping ==
You The best option in a walkable distance from the city centre would be park Tivoli. It is huge so you can also go easily find a good place to the Faculty of Arts which is on Aškerčeva 2hide and set up your tent somewhere. There are computers on the left and right on the ground floor but People often drink there are more in the basement. They don't have evening so it might be a password. They also have coffee machines were good idea to sleep in or at least close to the forest, so nobody will bother you can get a coffee (kava) for eur 0.25. (Nov 2010)
There Edit: if you go to the forest behind Tivoli, be prepared for it is also steep. Go there during daylight and plan in enough time to find a McD at suitable spot. If you go until the train station bag side of the park (just before the forest starts) and in go west you'll reach a little staircase out of stone. Climb it and you'll find a calm spot to spend the city centre that as always provides Free-Wifi.night
Don't worry about InternetAnother place is up the castle, there close to the antena. Just follow the path going away from the castle entrance and it will take you to a small meadow and a small forrest. There is free "Wifi Ljubljana" everywhere in the center (update Auga bigger chance to be spotted here.2014)
Eating Nomadwiki & Trashwiki
There is a market from Monday to Saturday at southern bank of river (vodnikov trg). It closes between 16:00 and 17:00 and there is always a lot of fruit and vegetables after the vendors. >> better check Trashwiki !nomadwiki
There is "Pizza Burek" which is a speciality from there, and a local made us taste the best seller in town, located in the Prazakova Ulica near the Bavarski Dvor bus station, for eur 2.30, it not the cheapest, but it's really really good. It's quarter a pizza with mushrooms, and lot of things in it, but you should definitely try it ! Note: The place is called Olimpia burek, if you are asking the locals.
