Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, one of the smallest and nicest capitals in Europe.

Hitchhiking out
Hitchiking out of Ljubljana is relatively easy, in all directions, Standing on the Autostrada on-ramp.
North towards Maribor, Austria, Hungary
From the main street, West of the Train station (Dunajska Cesta) take buses 6, 8 or 11 in direction of North. Get off in the station "Smelt", 5 minutes later, when you see the "World Trade Center" building. Ahead of you, you will see the motorway. On the first turn to the right, go into the motorway entry and stand on the side with your sign.
North-West towards Kranj, Villach (Austria)
Direction north-west there is the motorway E61/A2 towards Kranj (german: Krainburg) through the Karawanken Tunnel (Slovenian: Predor Karavanke) or over the pass over the border to Villach (slov.: Beljak) in Austria and further on on the Tauern-motorway to Salzburg and over to Germany. It is the way that is used by most of those numerous Germans that go to the Croatian coast for holidays.
=== Northeast towards Maribor, Graz, Vienna (Austria), Hungary 57 === Option 1: World trade center, Recommended From the center (Slovenska Cesta, Dunajska Cesta), take a bus number 6 (direction Črnuče), 8 (dir. Brnčičeva) or 11 (dir. Ježica) and get off at the stop "Smelt", close to the WTC tower. Walk a bit further on towards the motorway and turn right at the crossroads. Right after the fountain you will see the road forking, the left lane going down to the motorway, the right lane going higher up. Stand with your sign in the middle between the two lanes, or on the pavement next to the parking place entrance. Even though the first option might look a bit strange, this is the most common spot and it's easy for drivers to see you and there's enough space for one car to safely stop there. Option 2: Letališka Take bus no 27 towards "Letaliska" and get out at "Jarše". Continue following "Šmartinska cesta" about 400 meters and turn right from the traffic lights. There is a bus stop right after. Most of the cars passing now are going towards the highway. You can also take bus no 2 to "Nove Jarše" from Southern part of Slovenska cesta. The last stop is the mentioned hitchhiking spot.  === Northwest towards Kranj, Bled, Villach, Salzburg (Austria), Munich (Germany) 61 ===  Direction north-west there is the motorway E61/A2 towards Kranj through the Karawanken Tunnel (Slovenian: Predor Karavanke) or over the pass over the border to Villach (slov.: Beljak) in Austria and further on on the Tauern-motorway to Salzburg and over to Germany. It is the way that is used by most of those numerous Germans that go to the Croatian coast for hollidays. This motorway E61/A2 starts from the Ljubljana bypass. The best way to join this motorway is from the street Celovška cesta, at the bus station stop Šentvid(stand in the corner before the bus stop!!). You can get Get there easily by taking bus number 1(direction Vižmarje), 25(dir. Medvode), or 8 (dir. Gameljne) from the city centre in direction of Vizmarje. You If people who pick you up don't go as far as you like, you can hitchhike get a lift as far as the first "Petrol" gas station on the highway (17km away) or the former toll station, but make sure you have Torovo and keep hitchhiking there. There is also a signpetrol station at the Radovljica-exit (right before Bled) which is useful for getting into Austria. Even better spot Another option is to get dropped at ~25km from Šentvid, there's a tunnel about 500 m aheadgreat hitchhiking spot In that tunnel gl/maps/d4kMoNHzbEYPRT9d7 here on a ramp where there is an extra lane 's enough room for cars a car to stop and you can catch cars going from 3 different directions into (GPS 46.267470, 14.339623). === Southwest towards Koper, Nova Gorica, Rijeka, Pula (Croatia), (Italy) 61 === Option 1: Highway entrance Dolgi Most, Recommended  From the tunnelcity centre (Dunajska cesta, unlike Slovenska cesta) take the bus number 6, 1, 1D (direction Dolgi most - last stop) or 6B (dir. Notranje gorice), to bus stop "Dolgi Most". You will be dropped off on a large parking lot right next to a motorway bridge. There is also a Bicike(lj) (bike rental) stationnearby, where if you only cover one directionprefer it to taking the bus. To get there keep walking away from On the centre and turn right at opposite side of the traffic light road, there is a busy motorway entrance with a great hitchhiking spot where the cars leave the street can easily see you and join stop safely. Slovenians use this ramp to go to the highwayseaside, so waiting times should not be too long. The signs are visible  If your destination is Venice or further, the easiest way is via Nova Gorica (town on the walkable distance from Gorizia, Ita): use sign GO and ask to be dropped at the station. After you turned right you should see service area on the tunnelborder. My favourite place is at For Trieste it doesn't work well with TS sign - best option might be to use Koper sign and then ask the end because cars have a lot of time driver to see you. If people who pick drop you up dont go as far as you like, you can go off at ex Kozina exit (go right in the crossroads after toll station Torovo booths). It's only 3 km from the border and keep hitchiking thereon the main Rijeka-Trieste road.
=== South towards Koper, If your destination is Rijeka, Italy ===From the city center (Dunajska cesta, Kongresni trg) take bus number 6 in direction south, till the last station (Dolgi most)also rides going to Postojna or further west. Get out, at Postojna exit and on your left side you will side walk across the entry lane into highway from there (use the autostradabridge). There will also be an entry is a good spot to a parking of a small house, stand on hitchhike southwards just few hundred meters after the side there with your sign (you will see where everybody else stands...).
=== SouthOption 2: Rest stop Barje -East towards Novo Mesto, Zagreb ===Hitchhiking in this direction seems to be more difficult comparing to other direction. You have two options to follow this route:North (Sever)
1. You can also try your luck at the Resting area Barje, in direction of Zagreb. This service area is on the Ring around Ljubljana Catch bus 9 to bus stop "Pot Na Rakovo Jelšo" and is very well-served by a lot of long-distance drivers. To get there take bus number 1 or 1B in go straight to direction Mestni Log from the center. Go off one station before, last, called Koprska. Continue straight [the where bus takes a turn just before the station Korska - don't went follow it, go straight on!] on the Cesta Dveh Cesarev street Cesta v mestni log, after 2 minutes you will cross a bridge over a small river. Continue straight and cross the motorway over the bridge, and on (dont turn the left side the station is about 500 m away. There is a golf course between you and the station, which you can cross by climbing its fences (not to high) if the personal allows you, which hasn't always been the case. If they don't, you should take an immediate left directly where bus went after crossing the highway (you're still on the bridge at that point100 metres), descending to the guardrail. You are now between the golf course's fence and the highway, which is quite a narrow path at some points. After a few hundred meters, Asphalt road will bring you'll get to the resting area. 2Barja rest stop woth gas station. You can go to the on-ramp of the motorway at the edge Alot of the city. Not many cars go in this direction, and the ones that do usually do not enter trucks are going to Italy from the following on-ramp - this on-ramp mostly serves inter-urban traffichere, so you might have easy to wait get a lot of timeride west. From Just ask people at the city center (Slovenska Cesta, gas station "Pošta") Take Bus line 3 in direction of "Rudnik" (South), and get off .There is shower in the last fuel station. In front of you there will be the High-way entrance, which will be a turn left. Cross the street price 3 eur and on the side of the on-ramp road, on your left, you will see a small asphalt surface where all the cars pass, and there you can stand and hitchhike easilyplaces for wild camping around.
Notice - If you are hitchhiking towards Novo Mesto, pay attention that you are hitchhiking Option 3: Fuel station on the high-way entrance (the turn left) and not on the old road, which is continuing straight ahead. If you are Hitchiking to Zagreb, pay attention to the "Crossing borders" section in the Slovenia Page.highway
The highway no longer passes through Trebnje, so taking Near the train crossing of streets: "Pot Na Rakovo Jelšo" and "Barjanska Cesta" there isn't such is a good optionfuel station with a lot of cars heading towards Koper.
If you really can=== Southeast towards Novo mesto, Zagreb (Croatia) 2 ===  Option 1: Rest stop Barje - South (Jug)t  This service area is on the Ring around Ljubljana and is very well-served by a lot of long-distance drivers. To get there take a lift outbus number 1 or 1B in direction of "Dolgi most" from the center. Get off the bus on the stop "Mestni Log" and walk back in the direction of the highway. When you reach the overpass look for a very small and steep pathway on your right, starting next to the overpass. Descend down to the fence, turn right and walk a few metres untill you reach an unlocked door. When you're on the train is fairly cheap- €16other side of the fence,00 one-way you should already be able to Zagreb see the rest stop. Follow the pathway for another 100 m or so and lasts 2there you are.5 hoursThere is a shower for 3€ and places for wildcamping around. Trains are scheduled at * MartinJ888 August 2022:Works very well. The door is still unlocked! Took us about 1 hour to get a ride, asking people.#06*JackMcJackJack August 2023:35 This gas station and has been demolished and people rarely stop here, avoid this place. The on ramp beside the Lidl on Pot Rdečega križa is a 20min walk away from Mestni Log bus station. Most people here are heading south, but we found a ride to Šmarje - Sap gas station after an hour.#08Option 2:15 - this Highway entrance Barjanska cesta Catch bus 9 in direction of "Barje" from the center or the train station and exit on the final stop "Barje". You can take hitchhike next to the parking lot or walk down the "barjanska" street and try to find a better place. That's the entrance people from Ljubljana would use to enter the highway going south, so this spot might be less suitable for long distance picks, but perfect to get you as far as Belgradeto Novo Mesto.#14Option 3:45Highway entrance Rudnik#18:35Not many cars go in this direction, and the ones that do usually do not enter the motorway here - this on-ramp mostly serves inter-urban traffic, so you might have to wait a bit longer. From the city centre take a bus line 3 in direction of "Rudnik", and get off at the final stop. In front of you there will be the motorway entrance. Cross the street and on the side of the on-ramp road, on your left, you will see a small asphalt surface where all the cars pass, and there you can stand and hitchhike easily. Pay attention that you're hitchhiking on the highway entrance (the left turn) and not on the old road (Dolenjska cesta), which is continuing straight ahead. Drivers going to Kočevje and Ribnica use this entrance.
Sleeping
It is possible to sleep in the upside part of Tivoli park which is half an hour walking from the center of the city. It's not really a flat ground but if you search well you should find nice spots, clean, safe and quiet.
The best option in a walkable distance from the city centre would be park Tivoli. It is possible huge so you can easily find a good place to hide and set up your tent somewhere. People often drink there in the evening so it might be a good idea to sleep in Metelkova mesto wwwor at least close to the forest, so nobody will bother you. Edit: if you go to the forest behind Tivoli, be prepared for it is steep.metelkovaGo there during daylight and plan in enough time to find a suitable spot.org If you go until the bag side of the park (Metelkova street - Masarykova streetjust before the forest starts)on the grass between Jalla Jalla club and Tiffany clubgo west you'll reach a little staircase out of stone.Climb it and you'll find a calm spot to spend the night
