Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, one of the smallest and nicest capitals in Europe.
Hitching Out
Hitchiking out of Ljubljana is relatively easy, in all directions, Standing on the Autostrada on-ramp.
North towards Maribor, Austria, Hungary
From the main street, West of the Train station (Dunajska Cesta) take buses 6, 8 or 11 in direction of North. Get off in the station "Smelt", 5 minutes later, when you see the "World Trade Center" building. Ahead of you, you will see the motorway. On the first turn to the right, go into the motorway entry and stand on the side with your sign.
==Hitchhiking out = North-West =  === Northeast towards KranjMaribor, VillachGraz, Vienna (Austria) , Hungary 57 ===Direction north-west there is the motorway E61/A2 towards Kranj (german: Krainburg) through the Karawanken Tunnel (SlovenianOption 1: World trade center, RecommendedPredor Karavanke From the center (Slovenska Cesta, Dunajska Cesta), take a bus number 6 (direction Črnuče), 8 (dir. Brnčičeva) or over the pass over the border to Villach 11 (slovdir.: BeljakJežica) in Austria and get off at the stop "Smelt", close to the WTC tower. Walk a bit further on towards the motorway and turn right at the crossroads. Right after the fountain you will see the road forking, the left lane going down to the motorway, the right lane going higher up. Stand with your sign in the middle between the two lanes, or on the Tauern-motorway pavement next to Salzburg the parking place entrance. Even though the first option might look a bit strange, this is the most common spot and over it's easy for drivers to Germanysee you and there's enough space for one car to safely stop there. Option 2: Letališka Take bus no 27 towards "Letaliska" and get out at "Jarše". It is Continue following "Šmartinska cesta" about 400 meters and turn right from the way that traffic lights. There is used by most a bus stop right after. Most of those numerous Germans that go the cars passing now are going towards the highway. You can also take bus no 2 to "Nove Jarše" from Southern part of Slovenska cesta. The last stop is the Croatian coast for holidaysmentioned hitchhiking spot.
This motorway E61/A2 starts outside the city of Ljubljana. It goes off from the circle-road/-motorway leaving the city in the direction north-west. Somewhat out of town on a crossroad the motorway starts to the right. You can get there easily by taking bus number 1 from the city centre in direction of Vizmarje. Right before the exit to the motorway there's a bus-stop called Sentvid. Get out here. The bus-stop is perfect for hitchhiking since cars can stop here easily. I used this spot three times holding a Kranj sign and all three times I got picked up in less than half an hour. After about 15 kilometers on the motorway there's a big petrol station perfect for asking people for rides to Austria.
South Northwest towards KoperKranj, RijekaBled, ItalyVillach ===From the city center (Dunajska cesta, Kongresni trg) take bus number 6 in direction south, till the last station Salzburg (Dolgi mostAustria). There will also be an entry to a parking of a small house, stand on the side there with your signMunich (you will see where everybody else stands...).) 61
=== South-East towards Novo Mesto, Zagreb ===File:Hhfromljubljana.jpeg|right|thumb|334px|Hitchhiking in this direction seems to be more difficult comparing to other spot for direction. You have three options to follow this route:Kranj]]
1. Take Direction north-west there is the motorway E61/A2 towards Kranj through the Karawanken Tunnel (Slovenian: Predor Karavanke) or over the pass over the expensive train border to Trebnje Villach (4slov.2E, direction Novo Mesto: Beljak), from which you can easily hitchhike in Austria and further on on the Tauern-motorway to Salzburg and over to Zagreb since Germany. It is the road passes in the middle way that is used by most of those numerous Germans that go to the village, and there is no motorway yet in this partCroatian coast for hollidays.
2This motorway E61/A2 starts from the Ljubljana bypass. You can also try your luck The best way to join this motorway is from the street Celovška cesta, at the Resting area Barje, bus stop Šentvid (stand in direction of Zagreb. This service area is on the Ring around Ljubljanacorner before the bus stop!!). To get Get there take by bus number 1 or 1B in (direction Mestni Log from the center. Go off one station beforeVižmarje), last, called Koprska25 (dir. Continue straight on the street Cesta v mestni logMedvode), after 2 minutes you will cross a bridge over a small riveror 8 (dir. Continue straight and cross the motorway over the bridge, and on the other side go down the hill into the motorway itself, turn right and walk for 5 minutes till you get to the resting area. 3. You can go to the on-ramp of the motorway at the edge of Gameljne) from the citycentre. Not many cars If people who pick you up don't go in this directionas far as you like, and the ones that do usually do not enter from the following on-ramp - this on-ramp mostly serves inter-urban traffic, so you might have to wait can get a lot of time. From lift as far as the city center (Slovenska Cesta, station first "Pošta") Take Bus line 3 in direction of "RudnikPetrol" gas station on the highway (South17km away), and get off in or the last former toll stationTorovo and keep hitchhiking there. In front of you there will be There is also a petrol station at the HighRadovljica-way entranceexit (right before Bled) which is useful for getting into Austria. Another option is to get dropped at ~25km from Šentvid, which will be there's a turn leftgreat hitchhiking spot Cross the street and gl/maps/d4kMoNHzbEYPRT9d7 here on the side of the on-a ramp road, on your left, you will see where there's enough room for a small asphalt surface where all the cars passcar to stop (GPS 46.267470, and there you can stand and hitchhike easily14.339623).
Notice === Southwest towards Koper, Nova Gorica, Rijeka, Pula (Croatia), (Italy) 61 === Option 1: Highway entrance Dolgi Most, Recommended  From the city centre (Dunajska cesta, Slovenska cesta) take the bus number 6, 1, 1D (direction Dolgi most - last stop) or 6B (dir. Notranje gorice), to bus stop "Dolgi Most". You will be dropped off on a large parking lot right next to a motorway bridge. There is also a Bicike(lj) (bike rental) station nearby, if you prefer it to taking the bus. On the opposite side of the road, there is a busy motorway entrance with a great hitchhiking spot where cars can easily see you and stop safely. Slovenians use this ramp to go to the seaside, so waiting times should not be too long. If your destination is Venice or further, the easiest way is via Nova Gorica (town on the walkable distance from Gorizia, Ita): use sign GO and ask to be dropped at the service area on the border. For Trieste it doesn't work well with TS sign - best option might be to use Koper sign and then ask the driver to drop you off at Kozina exit (go right in the crossroads after toll booths). It's only 3 km from the border and on the main Rijeka-Trieste road. If your destination is Rijeka, take also rides going to Postojna or further west. Get out at Postojna exit and walk across the highway from there (use the bridge). There is a good spot to hitchhike southwards just few hundred meters after the bridge. Option 2: Rest stop Barje - North (Sever) Catch bus 9 to bus stop "Pot Na Rakovo Jelšo" and go straight to direction where bus went follow Cesta Dveh Cesarev street (dont turn the left side where bus went after 100 metres). Asphalt road will bring you to Barja rest stop woth gas station. Alot of cars and trucks are hitchhiking going to Italy from here, easy to get a ride west. Just ask people at the gas station. There is shower in fuel station price 3 eur and places for wild camping around. Option 3: Fuel station on the road to highway Near the crossing of streets: "Pot Na Rakovo Jelšo" and "Barjanska Cesta" there is a fuel station with a lot of cars heading towards Koper. === Southeast towards Novo Mestomesto, Zagreb (Croatia) 2 ===  Option 1: Rest stop Barje - South (Jug) This service area is on the Ring around Ljubljana and is very well-served by a lot of long-distance drivers. To get there take a bus number 1 or 1B in direction of "Dolgi most" from the center. Get off the bus on the stop "Mestni Log" and walk back in the direction of the highway. When you reach the overpass look for a very small and steep pathway on your right, starting next to the overpass. Descend down to the fence, turn right and walk a few metres untill you reach an unlocked door. When you're on the other side of the fence, you should already be able to see the rest stop. Follow the pathway for another 100 m or so and there you are. There is a shower for 3€ and places for wildcamping around. * MartinJ888 August 2022: Works very well. The door is still unlocked! Took us about 1 hour to get a ride, asking people. *JackMcJackJackAugust 2023: This gas station and has been demolished and people rarely stop here, avoid this place. The on ramp beside the Lidl on Pot Rdečega križa is a 20min walk away from Mestni Log bus station. Most people here are heading south, but we found a ride to Šmarje - Sap gas station after an hour. Option 2: Highway entrance Barjanska cesta Catch bus 9 in direction of "Barje" from the center or the train station and exit on the final stop "Barje". You can hitchhike next to the parking lot or walk down the "barjanska" street and try to find a better place. That's the entrance people from Ljubljana would use to enter the highway going south, so this spot might be less suitable for long distance picks, but perfect to get you to Novo Mesto. Option 3: Highway entrance Rudnik Not many cars go in this direction, and the ones that do usually do not enter the motorway here - this on-ramp mostly serves inter-urban traffic, so you might have to wait a bit longer. From the city centre take a bus line 3 in direction of "Rudnik", and get off at the final stop. In front of you there will be the motorway entrance. Cross the street and on the side of the on-ramp road, on your left, you will see a small asphalt surface where all the cars pass, pay and there you can stand and hitchhike easily. Pay attention that you are 're hitchhiking on the high-way highway entrance (the left turn left) and not on the old road(Dolenjska cesta), which is continuing straight ahead. If you are Hitchiking Drivers going to Zagreb, pay attention to the "Crossing borders" section in the Slovenia PageKočevje and Ribnica use this entrance.
Sleeping
It is possible to sleep in the upside part of Tivoli park which is half an hour walking from the center of the city. It's not really a flat ground but if you search well you should find nice spots, clean, safe and quiet.
The best option in a walkable distance from the city centre would be park Tivoli. It is possible huge so you can easily find a good place to hide and set up your tent somewhere. == Internet ==Internet cafes are quite expensive Edit: if you go to the forest behind Tivoli, be prepared for it is steep. Go there during daylight and plan in Ljubljana enough time to find a suitable spot. If you go until the bag side of the park (~€4/hrjust before the forest starts).
