North towards Oslo
The best place to start heading towards Oslo is the service station, STIGS CENTER, Incorrect link (see location of here (marked as Q (or K?)). There are also a few buses which go there, one of which is "402 Alvangen". Could just ask the bus drivers which goes to Stigs center, and the bus stop is directly on the onramp to the motorway so you just step off the bus and hitch! On a working day morning this seems to be a great spot to go north towards Stenungsund or Uddevalla, right before both these places there are major rest stops with petrol stations where lots of Norwegians and trucks headed into Norway stop, these locations are easier to find from the road than Stig Center and might have more traffic going to Oslo.
There are a few buses which go there, the easiest one is bus number 47 towards Tuve that leaves from Hjalmar Brantingsplatsen,

(As of July 2018 i tried this spot and waited there 6hrs. In the end a Swedish-American woman picked me. It looks like a nice spot and there is a bus stop which is suitable for cars to stop, maybe i was unlucky)
Alternatively, if you're still in the city-center, you can try getting a lift from the petrol station located close to this roundabout (near to Ullevi Norra, the big stadium) where cars are going in many directions, some of which might go to Oslo. However, most of the cars coming from the round about are going very very fast, and it's hard for them to stop on the street here. And, most cars at the petrol station next to it are just staying inside the city at this point. Possibly best chance is to make a sign for E6 N, and stand by the red light coming from the city centre towards the motor way. The light turns red often and for long enough that someone might pick you up and at least take you to Stig Center, focus your attention on the lanes marked for your destination, going north is the left and middle lanes.
A good day to get a ride to Oslo is probably a Sunday since many Swedes are home in Göteborg over the weekend, and on Sundays head back to Oslo for work. On a week day it may be more difficult to get a ride straight to Oslo, so don't be as picky with half way rides.
North towards Karlstad via E45
The spot is very good, just make sure the person that stops actually takes you out of Göteborg's urban area, to avoid being stuck in places like Surte or Nödinge.
=== Road 40 and E4 E40 to Stockholm /Borås/Gbg Airport ===The fastest route by car to Stockholm is not via E20 as all the traffic signs say. Most people take this route instead. A good spot is bus stop Kallebäcksgatan Kallebäcksvägen (Take bus 50 there or a tram to Elisedal and walk five mins). My friends tried it today and got a ride within half an hour. The cars can stop at best spot to hitchhike is near the sign "Jönköping"(5 minutes walking from bus stop "Kallebäcksvägen"): that is the right direction to Stockholm. The same road will bring you to Borås and to Göteborg flygplatsen (airport). Note that in case a driver is just going to the airport, it is good to know that near the entry/exit of the airport there is a station service which most likely is better than the ona good spot too (me and a friend successfully hitch-ramphiked from there to Uddebo, a small "hippish" village near Tranemo).
The "slow road" (E20) to Stockholm
South towards Malmö, Denmark, Germany
Option 1- Onramp in Kållered near IKEA Liftarkungen thinks that the best place to start hitchhiking south from Göteborg is "Sandsjöbackamotet", which is situated south of Mölndal. However it is time consuming and quite an adventure to get there. Use www.hitta.se or google maps in order to find directions. Or see Sandsjöbackamotet. Locals may only know it as the big Shell station along the road.
footsore got a lift all Catch the way commuter train towards Kungsbacka to Malmö from here within 20 the stop Kållered (10 minutes at 07:00 on ), and as you get off the train walk under the traintracks and forward another 200 meters under the highway and then turn left past supermarkets, IKEA until you see a Saturday morningOKQ8 gasstation.Tiger got a lift all Either hitch at the way to Malmö from here within 10 minutes gasstation itself or at 14:00 the onramp on a Friday afternoontop of the hill.
How to get to Sandsjöbacka:From the Central Station get on the the commuter train towards Kungsbacka (this train seems to be controlled from the front to the back but the journey can be short enough to not need a ticket if you are down back), getting off after 10 minutes in Kållered; alternatively, you can take bus number 761 (Any ride that will take any bus going past Mölndal, and get off here to take 761) as it goes past Kållered Station, there is much less chance getting caught this way. When you get off the train you'll see a Netto on the other side of the road which has excellent dumpsters should you need to acquire some food. To get to the hitching spot you just walk under the tracks and continue for another 100 meters or so until after you cross the highway where you turn left directly and follow the highway for about 5-10 minutes. You'll walk past Ikea (at which point there will be a Willys visible which also has excellent food-acquiring potential) and and a petrol station (OKQ8 petrol station). There are two hitching spots.1) Talk to people at the petrol station, km or stand on the exit of the petrol station (If you are going to Malmö, this further is a good option as most people will be refuelling for a longer journey)2) Walk up the hill and hitch at the on-ramp. Any ride because that's 5 or more kilometers is good as it will take would get you to Sandsjöbacka rest area which is one of the best places to find a ride to directly to Malmö or even Denmark and Germany. Bear in mind that Sandsjöbacka is the last rest area for at least 60 kilometers that's on the highway so itgasstation 's much recommended to stop there to avoid getting stuck at a small on-ramp somewhere.Sandsjöbacka'Note: A 24 hour hamburger restaurant which is located next to the OKQ8 petrol stationbest gasstation for almost a 100 km down this road.
Tiger Adds: An easy option is to try and get a ride towards Kungsbacka form anywhere in the city and ask them to drop Option 2 If you off at Sandsjöbacka rest stop. This can be achieved at any convenient to stop location with a sign and might be both easier and quicker than public transport.blue.Day Adds: Initially tried on ramp, however many people where disinterested to slow down, although a few showed good spirit. Much better luck working on the exit of the petrol station; stayed at on ramp for 45 minutes. Moved upon advice of local to exit of petrol station and picked up after 3rd car exiting, direct want to Malmö.hitch from town
Option 2 Take The petrol station on the bus ("grön express" recommended, stops by large crossing where the road Ullevigatan joins the E20 is just a few meters 10-15 minute walk from the trucks) to "Stigs center" north of Göteborgcentral station. A lot of trucks stop by Some hitchhikers have reported great successes with this spot while others have waited very long times to pause here and there's a good chance you'll get a ride. If nothing else you can find a ride to the location in option 1.
Option 3 If It is near the big stadium Nya Ullevi and if you want to hitch from town, some hitchhikers have found the petrol station prefer it there is a busstop on the large crossing where the road Ullevigatan joins the E20 was a great spot. Walking from central station is 10-15min walk but according to thomasmyrman and Tiger agrees this a difficult spot. The only way to get a ride here is by asking drivers that stop, outside of which there are not many. Many here were not leaving Göteborg, most drivers stop at this petrol station on their way into Göteborg. Tiger got a ride towards Kungsbacka after a bit Nya Ullevi where people can pull over an hour hereeasily, standing by the traffic lights before the "round about" seemed however that spot only tends to be the spot where the most drivers pass on their way south from here, other locations get good with a good very little south bound traffic. There is a small area if you follow the road towards malmö visible sign so that people notice you can walk to (where is this?) where cars can maybe stop but it is not ideal, use different spot if possibleactually hitchhiking.
Ferries : South West towards Denmark, and also Germany
There are ferries going all the time to Denmark (Fredrikshavn) and Germany (Kiel) from the Stena Line terminal. Take tram 9, 3 or 11 to Masthuggstorget or just start from "Järntorget". From there walk towards the water and find the place where trucks and cars drive onto the ferries. Check-in starts 1.5 h before ferry departure, so be on time! (but drivers can still go in about 20 minutes before..). Have a sign with the country of destination on it.
The best thing is that vehicles don't pay any extra for up to five passengers. There's about 4 ferries daily (seemingly more in summer) to Fredrikshavn and 1 to Kiel. Ask in the Stena Line office or check out the webpage http://www.stenaline.se/ or in English http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/
For your sign, write GRATIS under the DK. Most drivers won't know it's free to take another passenger.
On the ferry to Fredrikshavn, you have 2 3 hrs to find a ride (, try to visit the truckers special area) if you dont find any cars heading south, at least to the excellent trucker terminal heaven hitching spot of Padburg, on the Danish/German border.
Note: One hitcher reports having However even being in a car on the way to Fredrikhavn you may have to pay EUR a something like 6 despite being euros for the ferry. Or possibly more if you enter as a foot passenger For starting hitchhiking late and going to either places like Århus or Germany it can be quite amazing to catch one of the late ferries and end up in Germany even though leaving in a carthe afternoon.
Stena Line Ferries towards Kiel
You could try to convince the drivers when they wait to board the ferry. They board the ferry about 1-2 hours before departure.
