The name Derry is an anglicisation of the Irish name ''Daire'' or ''Doire'' meaning "oak grove". The conflict which became known as the Troubles is widely regarded as having started in Derry, of which twelve reminding murals in the Bogside district are still a popular tourist attraction. The city is unique as it still holds many intact fortifications from the Ulster plantation, such as the Guildhall, 17th century walls, and cathedrals.

Derry is one of the larger cities in [[Ireland]] and therefore easily reachable from both the south and eastern part of the island. Getting This city is probably the best point to reach unknown, extremely sonic points such as the sperrin mountains, Inishown the most northernly point of ireland, and other parts of donegal. Derry is a City located on the river foyle which forms a natural border between Northern and republic of ireland. From the city centre roads to the west, south and north all travel to Donegal, and to the East (Colraine, giants causeway and belfast) is Northern Ireland. To hitch out of the city seems harder it is best to walk or take a bus, these cost £1.50 but still manageable from the right spotsare halved for a childs fare! People are generally extremely friendly especially to travellers.
