You have the option of starting right in the center of the city on the Stadtautobahn (city highway). This highway leads into Gütersloh, which is not particularly useful, but it has a crossing with the A33 towards Paderborn, and this one in turn has a crossing with the A2. By jumping from exit to exit until you come to a parking or gas station, you have good chances on finding a ride towards Paderborn or even onto the A2. Be aware that some of the more central Stadtautobahn onramps suck big time for hitchhiking... but you can still get a ride if you trust your thumbs :-)
