Athens is the capital of Greece.
Hitching out
North to Thessaloniki, Macedonia (E75)
Take the metro from the center north to Nea Ionia station. From the exit of the metro station, turn right, go down a few dozen meters, and go under the tunnel. This is the start of Odos Elevtheriou Venizelou. Walk up this street to Odos Tatoiou and turn right. Walk straight for a few kilometers until the road rises to become a bridge over a large motorway. Don't go up the bridge, but rather take the road that stays below the bridge and runs to the right side. This is signposted Lamia, one of the first major cities north of Athens. The best time to get a lift is the early morning when local people are driving to work in more distant communities. Eventually someone will stop who can take you far enough north that you can escape the Athens metropolitan area and get long distance rides. For Macedonia, turn left about a kilometer after the enormous toll booth plaza before Thessaloniki.
Southwest North to PatrasVolos , Thessaloniki 75 === Take the metro line 1, till the last station "Kifissia". From there, cross the park. You'll find a busy bus stop, direction north, take the bus 509 Get off the bus after 30 min, at bus stop "Neo Terma", at the end of Agios Stefanos, when it makes a U-turn and continues back to the city. Walk 300m to the parallel of the high-way. It's quite busy with drivers avoiding toll station  You can walk 3 km to that Afidnai Toll Station or wait for a short ride, who's gonna drop you there. Also 4 km after toll station is Kapandriti Motorway Rest Area with BP fuel station You can also catch a ride at the point where drivers who avoided the tolls are getting back into the high way. Half of the rides go to Halkida, and the other half go further North. Decline rides that don't go in your direction, they will only put you in a worse spot. For a place to sleep before Thessaloniki, there is a 24 hour rest area/gas station in Korinos and it's called Olympus plaza. It includes a restaurant with free wifi and showers. Nobody will disturb you if you sleep on the couches and workers of the restaurant often give food away. === North-West to Thiva === New spot, i cannot confirm the hitch-hikeability of this route: Take the suburban till Magoula. From there, take the bus 861 till the last stop. There's only 35km left to Thiva. === West to PeloponnesosPatra or Tripoli 94 === ==== Option 1: Megara SEA ==== Take the suburban train direction Kiato, and get down in Megara. The controller always gets on the train in Nea Peramos, in the 1st or 5th (E94last)wagon. You can either : A) stay in the 3rd wagon, and when you see the control approaching, go the opposite direction. If the train is full, the control might be slow and you might arrive in Megara before they reach you. If they catch you without a ticket, you wont pay any fine, but just the 3 euro ticket. From the train platform of Megara, you can see the restaurant / petrol station. Cross the field, and find this underground pass B) go down in Nea Peramos and try to find a 5km ride to Megara. There are not many cars stopping there, but you can get a long ride. The intersection to Patra or Tripoli is just 40km away, be sure to ask for the correct direction before accepting the ride. ====Option 12: National Road 8 ====* Bus A16 from Aigaleo From Ag.Marina Metro Station (end of blue line) buses A16 or 865.* Bus B16 from Metxourgio From Pireas Metro Station (Red Lineend of green line), bus 871.* Bus 865 200m from Eleonas Metro Station Get off at 1st Aerodromiou Stop or Levkes Stop. There you will see the connection with National Road 8 (blue lineN8). ==== Option 3 : Eleusina Toll Station ==== With the same buses of option 2, you get off at Platia Elefsinas and walk 5.3km to Eleusina Toll Station. === South to Sounio
Get off Take the bus 122 from metro Elliniko to Saronida, go down at 1st Aerodromiou Stop or Levkes Stopthe last stop, walk along the coast to get out of Saronida, and from there you can hitch-hike to Sounio. There you will see the connection with National Road 8(N8)
==Public Transport ==Option 2====Harrys Truck-Stop
In the suburb of Aspropyrgos, in west Athens, there The metro has automatic doors. Black riding is a truck-stop well known and used by truck-driversquite common. There are many trucks from western and northern Europe which means We wait that hitchers will have very good chances of getting a lift to the port-city of Patras somebody opens it with their ticket and possibly even beyond into Europewe follow them.
The truck stop is Usually the controls are at the 17th km of National Road Athens-Korinthos metro intersections (Athinon-KorinthouSyntagma, Omonia, Attiki, Monastiraki). Ιt seems this is , where Halivas Cement Company isthey hide behind the turns of the connecting corridors.ItIf they catch you without a ticket, show them your passport, but don's a huge area and bus drivers and people know itt pay the fine. Till now, nobody saw their fines redirected to their countries.
====Option 3====Take Suburban Train Piraeus-Kiato from Piraeus or Athens aka Larissis Train StationIn nearly all stations, that are not underground you can also easily jump/climp the fence. In some underground stop points you can also jump easily small walls (not to be confused with Larissa TOWNfor example 0,5m in Omonia) aside of the regular check points) . Watch out for securities.
Get off at last stop. Walk straight from the right side of the railway line to the motorway you see. There turn right.
After 20m there is a left turn to Egio, Patras.
There are almost no controllers on that train. I have taken it 5-6 times last two months (April-May 2010) usually on Fridays
and have seen no controllers. My girlfriend neither in different occasions. Ticket is 6 €.
==Ferry from/to Athens ==Option 4====Eleusina Toll Station.
== Sleeping ==From the northbound hitchhiking point, go up the stairs, across the bridge It is quite common to buy a ticket on the other side port (of the motorway, take the stairs down, and then walk a few meters Piraeus - south. You'll find a small wooded area surrounded by a fence. The gate of this is open, you just have to look Athens) for it. Surrounded on all sides by motorway and away from any normal pedestrian avenues, this is a pretty safe place ferry to camp for the nightfirst stop, even pitch a tentbut getting off later. The large amount of trees means They never check you when you won't be seen by leave the ferry. Seldomly they check the people that are waiting downstairs for leaving the cars, which pass by rather fastferry.
