Athens is the capital of Greece.
Hitchhiking Hitching out ==  === North to Volos, Thessaloniki 75 === Take the metro line 1, till the last station "Kifissia". From there, cross the park. You'll find a busy bus stop, direction north, take the bus 509 Get off the bus after 30 min, at bus stop "Neo Terma", at the end of Agios Stefanos, when it makes a U-turn and continues back to the city. Walk 300m to the parallel of the high-way. It's quite busy with drivers avoiding toll station  You can walk 3 km to that Afidnai Toll Station or wait for a short ride, who's gonna drop you there. Also 4 km after toll station is Kapandriti Motorway Rest Area with BP fuel station You can also catch a ride at the point where drivers who avoided the tolls are getting back into the high way. Half of the rides go to Halkida, and the other half go further North. Decline rides that don't go in your direction, they will only put you in a worse spot. For a place to sleep before Thessaloniki, there is a 24 hour rest area/gas station in Korinos and it's called Olympus plaza. It includes a restaurant with free wifi and showers. Nobody will disturb you if you sleep on the couches and workers of the restaurant often give food away.  === North-West to Thiva === New spot, i cannot confirm the hitch-hikeability of this route: Take the suburban till Magoula. From there, take the bus 861 till the last stop. There's only 35km left to Thiva.  === West to Patra or Tripoli 94 === ==== Option 1: Megara SEA ==
=== North to Thessaloniki, Macedonia (E75) ===Take the metro from the center north to Nea Ionia station. (Suggestion: When you get off from the metro, take the bus no. 724 (it starts from heresuburban train direction Kiato, you can't miss the direction) and get off at stop "Gymnasio" that is 10th stop and just walk 50m. Way better than to walk few kilometers as described down in next lines)Megara. From The controller always gets on the exit of the metro stationtrain in Nea Peramos, turn right, go down a few dozen meters, and go under the tunnel. This is in the start of Odos Elevtheriou Venizelou. Walk up this street to Odos Tatoiou and turn right. Walk straight for a few kilometers until the road rises to become a bridge over a large motorway. Note that you will cross ringroad/highway E-94 1st or 5th (A6last) first, but continue straight until you get to the bridge going over highway E-75 (A1). Don't go up the bridge, but rather take the road that stays below the bridge and runs to the right sidewagon. This is signposted Lamia, one of the first major cities north of Athens. The best time to get a lift is the early morning when local people are driving to work in more distant communities. Eventually someone will stop who You can take you far enough north that you can escape the Athens metropolitan area and get long distance rides. For Macedonia, turn left about a kilometer after the enormous toll booth plaza before Thessaloniki.either :
Anywhere A) stay in the 3rd wagon, and when you hitch fromsee the control approaching, try to get a lift going at least to go the town/village called Oinofytaopposite direction. 10km If the train is full, the control might be slow and you might arrive in Megara before that there is they reach you. If they catch you without a huge gas station called Autogrill where ticket, you can get long lifts if you are luckywont pay any fine, but just the 3 euro ticket. In Greece it is also no problem to hitch on From the actual highway as long as train platform of Megara, you are far enough from can see the restaurant / petrol station. Cross the city suburbsfield, and find this underground pass
For a place B) go down in Nea Peramos and try to sleep before Thessaloniki, there is find a great 24 hour rest area[https://www.openstreetmap.org/gas station called Olympus plaza(olympusplazadirections?route=38.gr)0128%2C23.4148%3B37. It is 10km east of Katerini and has free wifi, showers and comfortable couches you can sleep on9954%2C23. Workers were really nice when Sma asked if she could sleep there, they said "of course!"3646 5km ride to Megara].
=== Southwest There are not many cars stopping there, but you can get a long ride. The intersection to Patras and or Tripoli is just 40km away, be sure to ask for the correct direction before accepting the Peloponnesos (E94) ======= Option 1 ====* Bus A16 from Aigaleo Metro Station (end of blue line) * Bus B16 from Metxourgio Metro Station (Red Line)* Bus 865 200m from Eleonas Metro Station (blue line)ride.
Get off at 1st Aerodromiou Stop or Levkes Stop. There you will see the connection with ==== Option 2: National Road 8(N8)====
==== Option 2 ====Harrys Truck-StopFrom Ag.Marina Metro Station (end of blue line) buses A16 or 865.
In the suburb From Pireas Metro Station (end of Aspropyrgosgreen line), in west Athensbus there is a truck-stop well known and used by truck-drivers23. There are many trucks from western and northern Europe which means that hitchers will have very good chances of getting a lift to the port-city of Patras and possibly even beyond into Europe539/ 871.
The truck stop is Get off at 1st Aerodromiou Stop or Levkes Stop. There you will see the 17th km of connection with National Road Athens-Korinthos 8 (Athinon-KorinthouN8). Ιt seems this is where Halivas Cement Company is.It's a huge area and bus drivers and people know it.
==== Option 3 : Eleusina Toll Station ====Take Suburban Train Piraeus-Kiato from Piraeus or Athens aka Larissis Train Station-be careful when you ask because there is Larissa city far from Athens. The train station is next to the red line metro station with the same name.
With the same buses of option 2, you get off at Platia Elefsinas and [http:There are almost no controllers on that train//osm.org/directions?engine=graphhopper_foot&route=38.0431,23.5420;38.0420,23. I have taken it 4962 walk 5-6 times last two months (April-May 2010) usually on Fridays and Sundays and have seen no controllers. My girlfriend neither in different occasions. Regular ticket is EUR 63km] to Eleusina Toll Station.
Get off at last stop "KIATO". Walk straight from the right side of the railway line to the motorway
you see. There turn right. After 20m there is a left turn to Egio, Patras.
You can easily hitchhike there.
===South to Sounio = Option 4 == Take the bus Toll Stationen 122 from metro Elliniko to Saronida, go down at the last stop, walk along the coast to get out of Saronida, and from there you can hitch-hike to Sounio.
Sleeping
From the northbound hitchhiking point, go up the stairs, across the bridge to the other side of the motorway, take the stairs down, and then walk a few meters south. You'll find a small wooded area surrounded by a fence. The gate of this is open, you just have to look for it. Surrounded on all sides by motorway and away from any normal pedestrian avenues, this is a pretty safe place to camp for the night, even pitch a tent. The large amount of trees means you won't be seen by the cars, which pass by rather fast.
Public Transport
Blackriding The metro has automatic doors. Black riding is possible quite common.Controllers lately don't wear the the dark blue uniform nor name tagWe wait that somebody opens it with their ticket and we follow them.In Usually the controls are at the metro sometimes the intersections (Syntagma, Omonia, Attiki, Monastiraki), where they hide behind the turns of the connecting corridors. If they catch you without a ticket, show them your passport, but don't pay the fine. Till now, nobody saw their fines redirected to their countries.Good news is they In nearly all stations, that are as rare as elephants not underground you can also easily jump/climp the fence. In some underground stop points you can also jump easily small walls (for example 0,5m in Omonia) aside of the regular check points). Watch out for securities.  == Ferry from/to Athens.== It's very possible is quite common to run into them between buy a ticket on the last and the first 2port (of Piraeus -3 days south of Athens) for a ferry to the monthfirst stop, but getting off later.Look for used tickets in entry/exit points or validating machinesThey never check you when you leave the ferry.Tickets of 1.40e or 0.70e student tickets Seldomly they check the people that are valid waiting downstairs for 90min. after first validationleaving the ferry.
