Vyshny Volochyok (Russian: Вышний Волочёк) is a city in Russia, located in the north of the Tver Oblast.

The city received its name from the uppermost portage on the ancient water route from the Baltic to the Caspian Sea, "The Route from the Varangians to the Arabs." This is where Russia's first hydraulic engineering system was created. The city stands on a network of canals and islands. It is sometimes jokingly referred to by hitchhikers as "Vsevyshny Svolochyok" (the Almighty Scoundrel), because the M10 highway winds through it in a very tricky manner, and many generations of hitchhikers have spent hours trying to get out of the city.
There is now a bypass option via the toll motorway M11.

Northwest towards Valday, Veliky Novgorod, and Saint Petersburg via M10
Through the settlement Priozyorny. Previously, city bus number 4 went to the northern exit.
Southeast towards Tver and Moscow via M10
Look for minibuses heading towards the Vyshnevolotsky Flax Factory and the Piano Factory.
Northeast towards Bezhetsk via R85
Look for a minibus heading to the settlement Prigorodny.
To the toll expressway M11
The new expressway passes far from the city, beyond the reservoir. You will need to reach it via the M-10. Stand just after the toll collection point and hitchhike there, before cars accelerate and get onto the highway itself. Hitchhiking on the actual M-11 is dangerous, prohibited, and ineffective.
