Birobidzhan (Russian: Биробиджан) is the capital of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in Russia. It is one of the smallest regional centers (74,000 inhabitants), located in Eastern Siberia between Blagoveshchensk and Khabarovsk. The Trans-Siberian Railway and the federal highway R297 "Amur" pass through the city. There is a bypass road around the city to the northeast, so transit hitchhikers do not need to enter the city.
