Dubna (Russian: Дубна) is a city in Russia located in the north of Moscow Oblast, 125 km from central Moscow. It is the only city in Moscow Oblast situated on the Volga River and is where the Moscow Canal begins.

Dubna is globally known as a center for nuclear physics; the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) is located here, and element 105 of the periodic table, "Dubnium," is named after the city.

Hitchhiking out

South towards Dmitrov and Moscow via A104

  • From the academic part of the city and the University district. Walk or take any transport to "Dubna" railway station. Cross the tracks at the pedestrian crossing by the first carriage (from the Moscow side) and see "Novoye Shosse" road going into the forest. It's 5 km to the exit post, but there are three busy turns towards the city and no streetlights along the way.
  • From the Chyornaya Rechka area. On foot past the "Tensor" factory and the "Chair" monument to the old cemetery. Near the white church, turn right, no streetlights. There is a gap in the curb ahead for entry to the old cemetery.
  • From the Bolshaya Volga area. At the end of Entuziastov street, a new road called Bolshevolzhskaya goes into the forest. You can hitchhike right there (no exits yet), or walk less than 2 km along it to Novoye Shosse. There's a streetlight and an acceleration lane at the turn towards Moscow.
  • By suburban train you can get to Zaprudnya station (conductors usually board near Verbilki), and exit onto the highway 400 meters north of the platform. There are no streetlights. Between Tempy and Zaprudnya, the Dmitrov highway receives additional traffic from Taldom, Zaprudnya, and Verbilki, making it easier to hitch out on weekends or at night than from Dubna itself.

Northeast towards Kimry along the left (eastern) bank of the Volga

  • From Left Bank Dubna, take a bus to Fedorovka village—now there is a large roundabout at the exit post.
  • If coming from the bridge, get off near the Raduga Sports Complex at the first roundabout and hitch following signs for Kimry.

Northeast towards Savyolovo along the right (western) bank of the Volga

  • By buses to horticultural partnership "Saturn".
  • By buses and minibuses to the final stop "ZZhBI DK" (not House of Culture, but a factory), then 300 meters by concrete path to the exit post. You can walk over the river bridge (no streetlights, surrounded by forest).

West towards Konakovo

Walk or take a taxi from Bolshaya Volga station to the ferry crossing. The crossing is paid for pedestrians in summer and a pontoon bridge in winter. You can negotiate with drivers directly on the ferry. If not successful, hitchhike immediately after the ferry; after that, there are no spots or streetlights. There's a bus "Ferry-Konakovo" by schedule.
