Kyzyl (Russian: Кызыл) is a small city and the administrative center of Tuva in Russia. The city is located in the Tuva Basin, at the confluence of the Bolshoy Yenisei (Bii-Khem) and Maly Yenisei (Kaa-Khem) rivers, which form the Upper Yenisei (Uluug-Khem). It is situated in the foothills of the Sayan Mountains in a semi-desert area.

Hitchhiking out

North towards Minusinsk, Abakan, or Krasnoyarsk via R257 "Yenisei"

  • The roundabout with the bypass road is located near the "Elik" sculpture. The surroundings are open steppe, with no housing, buildings, or bus stops nearby.

South (268 km to "Tsagan-Tolgoi" border crossing with Mongolia, only for citizens of Russia and Mongolia!) via R257 "Yenisei"

  • Bay-Khaakskaya street heads south to the roundabout with the bypass road. No buildings or bus stops are visible on satellite images.

Southwest towards Teeli via A162

  • Take Kalinina street to the large two-level interchange with the bypass road. Before the interchange is Penal Settlement No. 3 of the Federal Penitentiary Service for the Republic of Tuva. Right after the interchange is a cemetery. If you do not want to hitchhike near the penal colony or cemetery, look for a minibus or bus to the nearby village Sukpak.

East towards Saryg-Sep

  • The exit is in the working village of Kaa-Khem. Look for the Radio and Television Center.

  • You can also search for a host using CouchBot: send the city name in a message to the VK group or via CouchBot on Telegram. For tips on how and when to make a request to increase your chances, see here.
  • No public/charity hotels or shelters have been found.
  • If camping in your own tent, make sure not to be discovered by drunk locals. There is a "National Park of Culture and Leisure" in the center of town. How peaceful is it to camp there? Check and report back.
