Tournus is a small town whose Romanesque architecture (especially the Abbey of Saint-Philibert) attracts a number of tourists, mainly Swiss and German, but also British, as is the case in the rest of rural Burgundy. It is located equidistantly (100 km) from Dijon and Lyon, as well as from Chalon-sur-Saône and Mâcon (30 km). The fact that both the motorway and national road pass through the town creates favorable traffic for hitchhiking.

Hitchhiking out

North towards Dijon, Besançon, Belfort, Colmar

  • You can start hitchhiking right at the exit of the town, on the national road heading north, holding a sign with your direction or "A6" if you want to get on the motorway. There is an interchange soon after, and local people coming from Bresse often use this road to reach the A6. If you find a friendly driver, they might even drop you at the toll gate (where you can leave again to get back to the national road without trouble).
  • If you wish to go directly to the toll gate, it is fairly straightforward. From the town center, head towards the station, staying on the left side of the road. Pass the station, go past a motel and several intersections—after about twenty minutes on foot, you will find, on your right, an interchange (the motorway entrance ramp passes over the national road on a bridge). For safety reasons, do not walk up onto the ramp itself. If you arrive here on foot, try to use the exit ramp on the left side of the road (which is why you should stay on the left) and position yourself at the toll booth. It is very easy to get a ride from here, though most are likely to be short trips (to Chalon, for example). Make sure to ask if the driver is going in the right direction, as it's the same toll gate for both north and south. There is also a motorway service area before Chalon—ask to be dropped there; it's not very busy, but enough so you shouldn't have to wait excessively long. Alternatively, you can get out at the toll gate and try hitchhiking again from there.

North-West towards Auxerre, Paris

  • The direction is the same as above. BUT be careful not to miss the Beaune junction, where the A6 (Auxerre, Paris) splits from the A31 (Dijon, Belfort, etc.). You can get out at the toll gate, which is very busy, and change cars if necessary (many truck drivers stop here too).
  • If you have missed the junction, don't hesitate: turn back and change vehicles at Beaune.

South towards Lyon, Marseille

  • The same route as if you were going to Paris, but at the A6 toll gate, look for drivers heading south (Mâcon, Villefranche).
  • If you're heading to Marseille and your driver goes only to Lyon, be careful not to get out too late: there's a junction between the motorway that joins the Lyon ring road or passes under the tunnel and the one that bypasses Lyon altogether. People heading south usually bypass Lyon, so those you find just before Lyon may only be going just past or into Lyon itself. This can mean shorter rides and longer waiting times.

East towards Italy

I have never done this, but it is said to be fastest (not only as it is shorter, but also because many Swiss pass through the region on holiday). Head south out of Tournus, then turn left towards Bourg-en-Bresse—this should be verified.
