Take bus 10 from the central square (the bus stop is next to McDonalds). Get off at the last stop, in a suburban area called Novo Selo (sometimes also referenced as "naselje 9. maj"). The bus ride should cost around 50 RSD. Walk further in the same direction and cross a bridge over the motorway. You can hitch from after the bridge.
After passing Prokuplje, number of vehicles is getting somewhat lower, however, hitchhike is still okaythere are few cars and they are less likely to stop. You're better if taking a lift can still get onward lifts with vehicle registered Serbs driving to a foreign platesnational parks in the area, as not many Serbian registered vehicles cross into but if your destination is Kosovo at all. Considerable number of trucks going into Kosovo also passes here, you may have to walk the last 10-15 km to the border crossing.
