From the central bus station, take the bus to the town of Taretan (30 MXN as of 2022 march). Ask the driver to drop you of at the casseta the cobro of Taretan when the bus turns from the highway. From there you should have no problem hitching a ride south. Hitchhiking out
East towards Patzcuaro, Morelia
From the city center, take a local bus towards Caltzontzin (it's written Caltzontzin on the front window of the bus). Ask the driver to drop you off at the last gas station ("la última gasolinera" in Spanish).
