You can't take the ferry for free. [[User:Guaka|Guaka]] hasn't tried hitching a ride from cars going on the ferry. You pay (normally around $45-55) per person. And it's better to book in advance although be aware of deals around the start and end of the university year, when specials sometimes crop up.
Ok so there IS actually a way to get over the ferry for free, one can hitch a ride with people going over the ferry, it takes a bit of luck and a slightly daring hitch host.
Ive (not guaka, cameron a kiwi) done this once before,
I actually got caught though but it CAN be done, you just need to hide in the car beneath some baggage or something, then once the car is in its place in the boat get out and DONT FUCK AROUND, get straight up the stairs and onto the upstairs part of the ship where the people go, i got caught because i hung around the car looking for something and an employee of the ferry saw me and said "there should only be 2 people in this car" BAM
I just had to pay the normal fare though
If you ask around a bit on the ferry it will be easy to get a ride to [[Nelson]] or other places in South Island though.
