There's a checkpoint (reten) a few kilometers outside of town. In July 2013, no one was actually there, so it was pretty lonely and in the middle of nowhere, but there are speedbumps, a little booth for shelter, and all the traffic is going long distance. In July 2013, no one was actually there, so it was pretty lonely and in the middle of nowhere, but there are speedbumps, a little booth for shelter, and all the traffic is going long distance. To get there, just take a combi (5 pesos) toward Jalapa or Golga (something like that) and ask to be let out at the reten.
