Oh and even if you look like you're 12 years old you probably won't be carded at all and you can drink in any bar you want. If one place cards you just go to the next place, you can definitely get drunk in New Orleans no matter who you are if you have money. New Orleans loves a drunk person and drunk people love New Orleans. == Hitchhiking out ==
And it's not about Mardi Gras anyways. That's kinda for tourists and kinda too much. New Orleans is a constant party whenever you go. People get off the boat or oil rig they're working on=== West toward Baton-Rouge, come to New OrleansLafayette, blow all their moneyHouston, and by the time they're done spending their money they're ready to go back to work on the boat.TX ===
Get the streetcar (tram) that goes on Canal Street (which runs from the Mississippi river and all the way to a cemetery). It's recommended to go to The Abbey bar on Decatur streetcosts $1.25 for one ride or $1. Ask 50 for a transfer ticket if you get another bus before it everyone will know where . Take it is. Just a really good dark until the last stop (Cemeteries, far from the river, and comfortable bar, often seems to be full of hobosyou'll see tombs everywhere).
BUS :There is From there, even though it's tempting to get straight to the I-10, walk up to City Park Ave, turn right on it and then take a left on Canal Blvd. You'll see a cheap local small loop with 2 bus stops on it (don't walk too far, take the 1st loop). Here, take another bus New Orleans-Baton-Rouge for 5 $ : , the E1 route of the Jefferson Transit. It costs $1.50 for which you should have exact change because the driver does not provide any. The E1 route is often called the Veterans' bus since it goes far on Veterans' Blvd.
HITCHHIKING :Hitchhiking WEST toward : BatonYou need to get off before the I-10 on Veterans' Blvd. It's about a 15-Rouge25 minute ride. DON'T GET OFF AT THE FIRST UNDERPASS, Lafayette, Houston, Texas, Mexico, California :Hitchhiking in Louisiana is funny THAT IS THE CAUSEWAY. You'll be on a long boulevard for a while and beautifulyou'll see the highway at some point. Get Just hop off before you pass under it or tell the driver you are a hitchhiker and need to hitchhike to Baton-Rouge and he'll tell you the right spot . Look at the map and you'll get a great ride fast. see where the I personally waited -10 secondsand Veterans Blvd intersect. You need to stop just before it.
Followed all those step and There youwalk to the on-ramp to I-10 West. Use a sign! You'll get a 5 Stars SPOT, LIKE THE SPOT !!!see lot of gas stations on the way.

From the street car, walk up to city park avenue, turn right on it and after take left on Canal Blvd. You'll see a small loop with 2 bus stops on it ( don't walk too far, take the 1st loop ) . There, at the left bus stop you get the "Jefferson Transit " that comes around every 30 minutes. You need to hop on the E1 route : http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=116287600687409230633.00044b7975c7ce390c427&llEast towards Mobile, AL; North towards Hattiesburg, MS =29.993746,-90.185223&spn=0.112545,0.160675&z=13Down there they call this bus the Veterans bus since it goes far on Veteran's Blvd.

YouOn the south side of the interstate there'll be on s a nice long Blvd for a while and you'll see at some point the HighWayon-ramp with plenty of cars going not too fast, just hop off before you pass under it or tell the driver you are a hitchhiker and need space for them to hitchhiker to Baton-Rouge he'll tell you the spot. Look the map and you'll see where the I-10 and Veterans Blvd crossed. You need to stop just before itpull over (a hard shoulder).

Eating
There are loads of free food options in New Orleans if you're into that sort of thing. The Hare Krishna dinner (Sundays at 8PM at 2936 Esplanade) is even better than Hare Krishna dinner usually is, and they basically leave you alone religiously unless you're actually interested.
This link is a bit out of date, but it shows lots of places that serve free/cheap food!
