The '''Hitchhiking Zine''' is an idea by [[User:Zac Stewart|Zac]]dreamed up while discussing with a fellow traveler about how the travel guides of today are really just tourist guides. He joked that someone should write a travel guide that reviews the best parks to sleep in, the tastiest dumpsters to eat out of and the best places to hitch from. The joke's over and the Hitchwiki is that collective "someone".
==Goal==* Create a usable "travel guide" for hitchhikers with as much information and little bloat as possible.* Use all open source content, and create it with open source software.
== What gets included? ==
This first edition of the zine is going to be mostly limited to Western Europe, although, there have been some nominations for a few Central European countries. Please try to only nominate pages with a good bit of information.
Add <nowiki>{{Hitchhiking Zine nomination}}</nowiki> to the top of nominated pages. View recent changes to included pages [http://hitchwiki.org/Category:Zine_nomination?title=Special:Recentchangeslinked&target=Who does what==Category%3AZine_nomination here].

==To sort out=="I only paid for one place The little images to stay for the entire time I was in Europe, and slept in parks and other improv places nearly right of the lists indicate how much progress Zac has made compiling that section.:[[File:25%.png]] Information formatted from the entire timeHitchwiki into [http://www.openoffice. Food was similarorg/ OpenOffice] files (links, I generally didn't pay for much of itmap refs, etc. While doing all this I realized that guide books like Lonely Planet (especially LP!removed) didn't really have any place in a rucksack like mine, the only useful :[[File:50%.png]] Additional information it really provided was maps researched and sometimes a bus route or somethingadded:[[File:75%. But anywaypng]] Images, maps, tables, me etc added. Print layout begun:[[File:100%.png]] Finished and some other travelers I met thought that it would be really cool if someone made a DIY travel 'zine guide instead of the typical guidebook."ready for print
"I thought long === Other info ===Aside from information on various localities, what else should be put into the zine? ** Short phrase pages* Minimal unit and hard about the magnitude currency conversions == Publishing ==The actual length of such this "zine" might put it at odds with actually being printed as a project, and started taking notes on the sort of information I thought useful that didn't create bloat and take away zine at all the adventure from travel. Needless The most you can really hope to saystaple together is about 50 pages, I didn't get near enough information for a zine because I was too busy traveling to write about travelingand this will likely exceed that. I decided the only practical way Zac is currently looking into various methods of production to do it would be online open content, like a Wikideal with this. I thought about starting my own, and I still consider We will probably end up publishing it, but it would take ages to build in a wealth variety of knowledge like what already exists hereformats. So === Free, my question is would you be interested downloadable and printable PDF file ===Zac has been experimenting with some perl scripting in working combination with [http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~ajcd/psutils/index.html PSUtils] and has come up with me to edit down a way that a user could select various "chapters"cream of and then the script would process the crop" of this wiki chapters into printer's spreads and be available for printing the user to download and print in zine PDF format? I'm thinking 50 sheets, center folded. Standard photocopy  === Book ===Printing the zine formatas a book is an idea that Zac fancies very much. I He would want prefer to find a cheap book printer to do it the job, but since there's no way of telling if anyone would be willing to pay $5 or so for non-profit of coursea book, [http://www.lulu.com/ Lulu] may be used at first to test the water. Hitchhikers don't have money for guides! If you're interestedthe project does indeed become book sized, I have Zac may print a little experience few with zine pressing and we Lulu to see how it goes. They could mail them out for like $2 be sold at a peice price to cover just printing and shipping, or something slightly more if we wanted to help fund use this site further and as a project to raise money to cover the pressing hosting of the zinesHitchwiki. Just let me know." == Who wants to help ==* [[User:Zac Stewart|Zac]]* [[User:Guaka|Guaka]]* [[User:amylin|amylin]]* [[User:Salman|Salman]]* [[User:platschi|platschi]]* [[User:xo|xo]]* [[User:Quarim|Quarim]]* [[User:Brackers|Brackers]] [[Category:Media]][[Category:Hitchhiking Zine]]
