If possible, take the city bus to Emerald Estates, and get off at the furthest bus stop along the highway. Walk down the road 50 m, and there you will find is a straight stretch with a wide shoulder where getting rides is fairly easy. While there isn't much traffic north of Whistler, getting a ride is fairly easy in those these parts.
