You have the option of starting right in the center of the city on the Stadtautobahn (city highway), near the train station. This highway leads into Gütersloh, which is not particularly useful, but it has a crossing with the A33 towards Paderborn, and this one in turn has a crossing with the A2. By jumping from exit to exit until you come to a parking or gas station, you have good chances on finding a ride towards Paderborn or even onto the A2. Be aware that some of the more central Stadtautobahn onramps suck big time for hitchhiking... but you can still get a ride if you trust your thumbs :-)

If going north, this might be the best option: Take a tram towards ''Brackwede''. Get off at that station and walk down to the tunnel. Go in direction north-west (to your left, roughly saying) where you'll come to a meadow. Cross this field over to a street where you will see a traffic light some 100m further up. You're now in the Bielefeld district of ''Quelle''. Walk straight forward over the crossing, and after appr.50m you'll find enough of space for stopping a car. Traffic mainly comes from the left side, slowly, moving up towards Halle or further. Cars can stop easily along the hard shoulder. Additionally, you could ask drivers at the supermarket just next to you, but traffic might be quite local in there.
== Sleeping ==
There is a castle called Sparrenburg on a hill near the center. When you come through the main gate, there is a cozy dark hole/room in the ramparts on your left... probably it gets checked routinely when they close the gate in the evening, but the gate itself is a very simple climbing job and failing that, there is lots of cozy bushes around up there.

In the center, there is a Vapiano branch. Table diving can be done but involves a fair amount of waiting.
