Hitchwiki:Why we work on Hitchwiki

Hitchwiki is a positive project which has got to move. Hitchhiking as a way of travel in itself is great and could / should play a more imminent role in our society, when we are eager to search for improving for example social cohesion of a society as a whole or the quest to control pollution caused by irresponsible private use of motorvehicles.

''Sharing is the key.'' Indeed, these experiences gained by thumbers all around the world should not vanish into the abyss of dissolution but rather gather here on these wiki pages which are free to be edited by anyone from anywhere. I share my knowledge and I receive a knowledge of someone else - we all gain something from the process. Happy to help - and happy to be enriched.

I have yet to have a hitchhiking trip since I’ve found Hitchwiki, but I’m sure the tips here will be very useful the next time I thumb. So by contributing to this wiki, I’m paying in advance for its benefit – paying in hitchhiker’s way, of course, with no money involved.

A couple of years ago, when I was looking for hitchhiking spots on the internet I had to check several websites to find everything I needed to know. The people I knew where using different sites to dump their advice, adding comments or editing the sites was not always possible and you had to go through a lot of information to abstract from the different experiences. I hope that the structure of the hitchwiki is helping to collect as much useful information as possible and to keep it short and clear at the same time − that's why I contribute *here*.

While making my first steps in the wiki I also realised that the sharing of information not only about good spots but also about strategies, safety and the things happening around hitchhiking is also something that has not been done in an organised way yet (as far as I know). It rather happened from person to person which is also a good way but in this way your information is limited to the people you meet. So, setting up this wiki is also about giving access to valuable tips&tricks for everyone (who has a computer and can read these pages... :o).

I was thinking and talking about hitchhiking before I did it for real the first time. Everybody in my environment told me not to do it, "its dangerous", "we will get stuck somewhere", you know all these helpful guides which never hitched on their own. Then I searched the internet for information about hitchhiking, first saw the site of Veit Kühne then the one from [[Ludovic Hubler]], then the site of [[abgefahren e.V.]] They, especially the storys from Ludovic made me go out! Today after I have hitched some kilometers I want to share my knowledge too and maybe make some new people to go out and give it a try. Also I want to give people new to hitchhiking the chance to explore this new way of travelling in a safe environment. That's why i add info and that's why I work for abgefahren e.V.

I am digging the shit out working here. I'm from the U.S. and that's where I have traveled. Whole states don't have pages! I get to write whatever I believe is true for so much of the US- if you're a hitchhiker from the US you should totally sign up and start working here, so much fun to write 3 sentence snap judgments of a place and have that be the page- I find snap judgments of a place are often revealed to be incredibly true.

This website is what I wished Wikipedia was when I was on Wikipedia: Free! A frontier! Not 10,000 bullshit admins saying if you don't want to learn the exact way to puntuate and cite everything we don't want your contributions!
