From there, even though tempting to get to the I-10 straight, I strongly advice you to NOT do that except if you are a girl you a crazy bas ass lucky hitchhiker like Monsieur Rodger. There is just no room for car to stop but take a guess if you feel so.
From the street car, walk up to city park avenue, turn right on it and after take left on Canal Blvd. You'll see a small loop with 2 bus stops on it ( don't walk too far, take the 1st loop ) .
So at this time you'll get to another bus, the jefferson transit ( http://www.jeffersontransit.org/schedules/E1Veterans-Map.htm ) , 1.5$ and prepare exact money, no change there !

There, at the left bus stop you get the "Jefferson Transit " that comes around every 30 minutes.
You need to hop on the E1 route : http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=116287600687409230633.00044b7975c7ce390c427&ll=29.993746,-90.185223&spn=0.112545,0.160675&z=13
