Just tried to add my own story re: women hitchhiking but the editing died. First time I've edited an article so sorry, but the other 'personal story' was so shocking to me and so unlike my experiences that I had to add it! Please edit and/or delete if I did anything wrong.

::::I agree with your theory that wherever there is little tourism, people are friendlier towards hitchhikers and thus providing real quick lifts in Turkey. I guess that's because most local people in touristy localities think of hitchhikers as, true or not (and most likely not!), "those with heavy wallets but are penurious and/or looking for adventure".
