Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, one of the smallest and nicest capitals in Europe.

Hitchhiking out
Hitchiking out of Ljubljana is relatively easy, in all directions, Standing on the Autostrada on-ramp.
North towards Maribor, Austria, Hungary
From the main street, West of the Train station (Dunajska Cesta) take buses 6, 8 or 11 in direction of North. Get off in the station "Smelt", 5 minutes later, when you see the "World Trade Center" building. Ahead of you, you will see the motorway. On the first turn to the right, go into the motorway entry and stand on the side with your sign.
North-West towards Kranj, Villach (Austria)
Direction north-west there is the motorway E61/A2 towards Kranj (german: Krainburg) through the Karawanken Tunnel (Slovenian: Predor Karavanke) or over the pass over the border to Villach (slov.: Beljak) in Austria and further on on the Tauern-motorway to Salzburg and over to Germany. It is the way that is used by most of those numerous Germans that go to the Croatian coast for holidays.
This === Northeast towards Maribor, Graz, Vienna (Austria), Hungary 57 === Option 1: World trade center, Recommended From the center (Slovenska Cesta, Dunajska Cesta), take a bus number 6 (direction Črnuče), 8 (dir. Brnčičeva) or 11 (dir. Ježica) and get off at the stop "Smelt", close to the WTC tower. Walk a bit further on towards the motorway E61/A2 starts outside and turn right at the city of Ljubljanacrossroads. It goes off from Right after the fountain you will see the circle-road/-forking, the left lane going down to the motorway leaving , the city right lane going higher up. Stand with your sign in the middle between the two lanes, or on the pavement next to the parking place entrance. Even though the first option might look a bit strange, this is the most common spot and it's easy for drivers to see you and there's enough space for one car to safely stop there. Option 2: Letališka Take bus no 27 towards "Letaliska" and get out at "Jarše". Continue following "Šmartinska cesta" about 400 meters and turn right from the traffic lights. There is a bus stop right after. Most of the cars passing now are going towards the highway. You can also take bus no 2 to "Nove Jarše" from Southern part of Slovenska cesta. The last stop is the mentioned hitchhiking spot.  === Northwest towards Kranj, Bled, Villach, Salzburg (Austria), Munich (Germany) 61 ===  Direction north-westthere is the motorway E61/A2 towards Kranj through the Karawanken Tunnel (Slovenian: Predor Karavanke) or over the pass over the border to Villach (slov.: Beljak) in Austria and further on on the Tauern-motorway to Salzburg and over to Germany. Somewhat out It is the way that is used by most of town on a crossroad those numerous Germans that go to the Croatian coast for hollidays. This motorway E61/A2 starts from the Ljubljana bypass. The best way to join this motorway is from the street Celovška cesta, at the rightbus stop Šentvid (stand in the corner before the bus stop!!). You can get Get there easily by taking bus number 1 (direction Vižmarje), 25 (dir. Medvode), or 8 (dir. Gameljne) from the city centre . If people who pick you up don't go as far as you like, you can get a lift as far as the first "Petrol" gas station on the highway (17km away) or the former toll station Torovo and keep hitchhiking there. There is also a petrol station at the Radovljica-exit (right before Bled) which is useful for getting into Austria. Another option is to get dropped at ~25km from Šentvid, there's a great hitchhiking spot here on a ramp where there's enough room for a car to stop (GPS 46.267470, 14.339623). === Southwest towards Koper, Nova Gorica, Rijeka, Pula (Croatia), (Italy) 61 === Option 1: Rest stop Barje - North (Avtocestno počivališče Barje - Sever) Catch bus 1 to bus stop "Tbilisijska", continue walking in the same direction and turn left at the roundabout. Follow the road for a few more minutes and cross the meadow to reach the rest stop. Alot of Vizmarjecars and trucks are going to Italy from here, easy to get a ride west. Just ask people at the gas station. There is a shower in fuel station for 3 eur and places for wild camping around. If your destination is Venice or further, the easiest way is via Nova Gorica (town on the walkable distance from Gorizia, Italy): use sign GO and ask to be dropped at the service area on the border. Right before For Trieste it doesn't work well with TS sign - best option might be to use Koper sign and then ask the driver to drop you off at Kozina exit to (go right in the motorway therecrossroads after toll booths). It's a busonly 3 km from the border and on the main Rijeka-stop called SentvidTrieste road. If your destination is Rijeka, take also rides going to Postojna or further west. Get out hereat Postojna exit and walk across the highway from there (use the bridge). There is a good spot to hitchhike southwards just few hundred meters after the bridge. Option 2: Highway entrance Dolgi Most  From the city centre (Dunajska cesta, Slovenska cesta) take the bus number 6, 1, 1D (direction Dolgi most) or 6B (dir. The Notranje gorice), to bus-stop "Dolgi Most". You will be dropped off on a large parking lot right next to a motorway bridge. There is perfect for also a Bicike(lj) (bike rental) station nearby, if you prefer it to taking the bus. On the opposite side of the road, there is a busy motorway entrance with a great hitchhiking since spot where cars can easily see you and stop here easilysafely. I used this  April 2024: Unfortunately, after the reconstruction the entrance doesn't make such a good hitchhiking spot three times holding anymore. Hitchhiking is still possible, but stopping has became much more difficult for drivers. The Barje rest stop is recommended instead, or try to get a Kranj sign and all three times I got picked up in less than half an hourpick from the Petrol gas pump on Tržaška cesta. After about 15 kilometers  Option 3: Fuel station on the motorway road to highway Near the crossing of streets: "Pot Na Rakovo Jelšo" and "Barjanska Cesta" there's is a big petrol fuel station perfect for asking people for rides to Austriawith a lot of cars heading towards Koper.
=== South Southeast towards mesto, RijekaZagreb, (ItalyCroatia ) 2 ===From the city center (Dunajska cesta, Kongresni trg) take bus number 6 in direction south, till the last station (Dolgi most). Get out, and on your left side you will side the entry lane into the autostrada. There will also be an entry to a parking of a small house, stand on the side there with your sign (you will see where everybody else stands...).
=== South-East towards Novo Mesto, ===Hitchhiking in this direction seems to be more difficult comparing to other direction. You have two options to follow this route:
Option 1. You can also try your luck at the Resting area : Rest stop Barje, in direction of Zagreb. This service area is on the Ring around Ljubljana. To get there take bus number 1 or 1B in direction Mestni Log from the center. Go off one station before, last, called Koprska. Continue straight on the street Cesta v mestni log, after 2 minutes you will cross a bridge over a small river. Continue straight and cross the motorway over the bridge, and on the other side go down the hill into the motorway itself, turn right and walk for 5 minutes till you get to the resting area. 2. You can go to the on-ramp of the motorway at the edge of the city. Not many cars go in this direction, and the ones that do usually do not enter from the following on-ramp - this on-ramp mostly serves inter-urban traffic, so you might have to wait a lot of time. From the city center South (Slovenska Cesta, station "Pošta"Jug) Take Bus line 3 in direction of "Rudnik" (South), and get off in the last station. In front of you there will be the High-way entrance, which will be a turn left. Cross the street and on the side of the on-ramp road, on your left, you will see a small asphalt surface where all the cars pass, and there you can stand and hitchhike easily.
Notice This service area is on the Ring around Ljubljana and is very well- If served by a lot of long-distance drivers. To get there take a bus number 1 or 1B in direction of "Dolgi most" from the center. Get off the bus on the stop "Mestni Log" and walk back in the direction of the highway. When you are hitchhiking towards Novo Mestoreach the overpass look for a very small and steep pathway on your right, pay attention that you are hitchhiking on starting next to the high-way entrance (overpass. Descend down to the fence, turn left) right and not walk a few metres untill you reach an unlocked door. When you're on the old roadother side of the fence, which is continuing straight ahead. If you are Hitchiking to Zagreb, pay attention should already be able to see the "Crossing borders" section in rest stop. Follow the Slovenia Pagepathway for another 100 m or so and there you are. There is a shower for 3€ and places for wildcamping around.
* MartinJ888 August 2022: Works very well. The door is still unlocked! Took us about 1 hour to get a ride, asking people. *JackMcJackJack August 2023: This gas station and has been demolished and people rarely stop here, avoid this place. The on ramp beside the Lidl on Pot Rdečega križa is a 20min walk away from Mestni Log bus station. Most people here are heading south, but we found a ride to Šmarje - Sap gas station after an hour. Option 2: Highway entrance Barjanska cesta Catch bus 9 in direction of "Barje" from the center or the train station and exit on the final stop "Barje". You can hitchhike next to the parking lot or walk down the "barjanska" street and try to find a better place. That's the entrance people from Ljubljana would use to enter the highway no going south, so this spot might be less suitable for long distance picks, but perfect to get you to Novo Mesto. Option 3: Highway entrance Rudnik Not many cars go in this direction, and the ones that do usually do not enter the motorway here - this on-ramp mostly serves inter-urban traffic, so you might have to wait a bit longer passes through Trebnje. From the city centre take a bus line 3 in direction of "Rudnik", and get off at the final stop. In front of you there will be the motorway entrance. Cross the street and on the side of the on-ramp road, on your left, you will see a small asphalt surface where all the cars pass, and there you can stand and hitchhike easily. Pay attention that you're hitchhiking on the highway entrance (the left turn) and not on the old road (Dolenjska cesta), which is continuing straight ahead. Drivers going to Kočevje and Ribnica use this entrance. == Transportation == Ljubljana is a very walkable and cyclable city, so those two are best options to move around. I highly recommend the bike share system Bicike(lj), used daily by many locals. It costs only 1€ for a weekly subscription (and 3€ for the whole year). You can use the bikes unlimitedly 24/7, the 1st hour of every use is free. Definitely the cheapest and most comfortable option, download the BicikeLJ app for use.Another option is taking the train there isn't such busses, payment is possible on the bus with a good credit card - one 90 min ride costs 1.3€. In case of credit card payment changing the busses is not possible (every change will cost another 1.3€). Another optionis to use the app Urbana or buying the city card.
Sleeping
It is possible to sleep in the upside part of Tivoli park which is half an hour walking from the center of the city. It's not really a flat ground but if you search well you should find nice spots, clean, safe and quiet.
The best option in a walkable distance from the city centre would be park Tivoli. It is possible huge so you can easily find a good place to hide and set up your tent somewhere. People often drink there in the evening so it might be a good idea to sleep in Metelkova mesto wwwor at least close to the forest, so nobody will bother you. Edit: if you go to the forest behind Tivoli, be prepared for it is steep.metelkovaGo there during daylight and plan in enough time to find a suitable spot.org If you go until the bag side of the park (Metelkova street - Masarykova streetjust before the forest starts)on the grass between Jalla Jalla club and Tiffany clubgo west you'll reach a little staircase out of stone.Climb it and you'll find a calm spot to spend the night
== Internet ==Internet cafes are quite expensive in Ljubljana (~€4/hr). You can surf for free at KiberPipaAnother place is up the castle, a cyber center located at Kersnikova 6close to the antena. You can also surf for free using computer at Just follow the path going away from the student info center, located next castle entrance and it will take you to Preseren square, on Trubarjeva ulicaa small meadow and a small forrest. There is also a club called KMŠ on Trzaska street that has free internet access and WiFi (you just have bigger chance to order coffee)be spotted here.
FABRKA KLUB Poljanska street 9, close to Dragons bridge - free internet access and WiFi (you just have to order coffee).KAMERA KLUB Kolodvorska street 6, close to railway station - free internet access and WiFi (you just have to order coffee).== Nomadwiki & Trashwiki ==
Additionally, At the back of the train station, right before the tracks, there is a tourist information computer which can be used for free internet surfing by clicking in the search tab, typing what your looking for, and finding it in the results (there is no URL bar provided).nomadwiki
