Nepali people only hitchhike for short distances. They try to get a lift from trucks only. The tradition of hitchhiking for longer distances is unknown to the Nepali people. They mostly don't understand what a tourist is doing while trying to get a lift. Many times they will come to you and try to explain how can you get a bus. Truckdrivers know very well what a hitchhiking person is doing. In practice hitchhiking works the same as in most third world countries: rides can be had if you clearly explain "No money" before entering the car. Truckdrivers and also normal cars might stop. Some of the car owners are very kind and nice, but always mention "No money" before entering their vehicles.

On major highways it is easy to get a lift. All the roads between Kathmandu, Pokhara, cities of Chitwan, Lumbini, Bhairahawa or hitchhiking to India through Sonauli work well. Always is better to have a board with your destination city.
For short distances in or between the villages the very small trucks are a good target. If they stop, no talk is needed just jump up to the back side of the truck and make a signal (knock) later when you wish to get off.
Waiting times can be long in remote areas due to lack of traffic, and in fact on some roads the only vehicles that will pass by are buses.
Truck drivers are unlikely to speak English. Bring a Nepali phrasebook and -- because many truck drivers are coming from India -- a Hindi phrasebook as well.
