Tulun (Russian: Тулун) is a city in Russia, located in the center of Irkutsk Oblast.

  • It is known for its criminal authorities, correctional facilities, a closed coal mine, and a preserved major station on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
  • For hitchhikers, it is one of the toughest cities on the "Siberia" route – a sprawling city without a bypass, with the turn to Bratsk located in the city center.
  • Hitching within the city does not work well due to the criminal mindset of the local population, and transit drivers try to pass through without stopping for the same reasons and are not prone to picking up hitchhikers. If you do not need to turn to Bratsk, it is best to leave the car heading to Tulun a few dozen kilometers before the city at a good spot and select transit transport across the city.

Hitchhiking in

  • From the west and east, the city is accessed via the former federal highway R255 (formerly M53).

Hitchhiking out

West towards Nizhneudinsk, Tayshet, Kansk, Krasnoyarsk via R255

  • Between the city center and the station, you need to turn towards the settlement of the now-closed oil plant. Look for Traktovaya Street. There is a gas station at the city exit.

Southeast towards Angarsk and Irkutsk via R255

  • Exit via Gidroliznaya Street. There is no checkpoint. At the city exit there is a small parking lot with cafes.

North towards Bratsk and Ust-Kut via "Vilyuy" highway A331

  • Bratsk (Vilyuy) ring junction. From the city center, Lenina St. leads here, and from the station in sequence: Sovkhoznaya, Elevatornaya, and Transportnaya Streets. From the junction, the road to Bratsk ascends a hill and then passes through single-story gray suburbs in the direction of the New Cemetery. The situation here can be "sketchy." From the junction to the city limits is about two kilometers.
