The city is located approximately 300 km from Novosibirsk and 500 km from Krasnoyarsk, on both banks of the Tom and Iskitimka rivers. It is situated in the northern part of the Kuznetsk Coal Basin (Kuzbass). Kemerovo is among the largest cities by area in the country, making hitchhiking through it rather inconvenient, with no full bypass; there are only partial bypass roads on the northwest and south. The population is 544,600 (2024). Since the early 20th century, Kemerovo has been a center for the coal industry as well as chemical, light, and food industries.
